    What we all want

Some people spend their time working very hard, others trying as much as possible to avoid work. Some people are looking for the love of their life, while others are looking for fast love. But what is behind these actions and behaviours? It’s basically the same thing, the pursuit of happiness, either from material things, sense of satisfaction gained from hard work, the time and sense of freedom gained by working less, feeling loved and special or physically satisfied all, of which people hope will bring them happiness.

But do any of these sets of actions really provide the seeker with happiness? Well in some cases yes, for a while, but it is not any of these sets of actions that really provide the long term happiness people are looking for.

    Bear with me here….

My gran was neither famous nor wealthy. She didn’t have particularly large amounts of free time in her life, except near the end when her body was starting to fail. She found the love of her life late and lost him early, but she was one of the happiest people that I have ever known. She had a pretty crappy life to be fair, if you were to look at it from the outside, or certainly from a particular perspective. Let me tell you about her as it will help me share what she knew and what has taken me quite a while to figure out.

My gran was the eldest of a very large family and had a very difficult relationship with her mother, who didn’t love or cherish her as she should. This was only acknowledged by her mother on her death bed when her other beloved children were nowhere to be seen and my gran nursed her until the end. She did however have a very close relationship with her father who, like her, was a glass half full type of person and very creative. My gran was blinded in one eye in an accident as a child which affected her sense of depth and distance. She was taken out of school early, to help her mother run the family home and look after the younger siblings.

Either as a result, or despite this, my gran really valued education. She read a lot and even when she had to wear glasses and use a magnifying glass to read, she would read daily. I never really understood how devastating it would have been for her when she could no longer read at all, but she then turned to listening to tapes and the radio. This was long before the internet and pod casts. She would have loved how our modern world has allowed us to expand our knowledge and connect. She used to say to me people can take a lot of things from you in life, but they can’t take your education, it can open doors. This had a profound impact on me as an adult and although I hated school at the time she was telling me this, I went on to achieve several degrees and still have a thirst for knowledge and desire to use every opportunity in life to learn. I’ll come back to how it can open doors later!

She didn’t marry until later in life and although my gran loved children and had spent her life raising her younger siblings, she was unable to have any children of her own. So they adopted my mum. My gran spoke to me several times about how they prayed to have a child and were overjoyed when they were able to take my mum home. My gran became the main bread winner when her
