Chapter 1: What Is Mindfulness?
If you ask ten different people what mindfulness is, you will get ten different responses. Mindfulness is simply the practice or ability to think in the here and now. It is the attitude you achieve when you learn how to let go of the past and stop worrying about the present. When speaking about the past and the future, people who live in the Lowcountry always say that there is no reason to pay the toll twice. What they mean is that there is no reason to beat yourself up over something that happened in the past. Nor is there any good that can come out of worrying about what may happen in the future. Once you achieve mindfulness, you will no longer let anything but the present occupy your mind. This is critically important for an athlete.
One of the biggest reasons athletes suffer a slump is because they do not know how to let go of the past. They are thinking about the last time they came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit into a double play. Or they are remembering what happened in their last football game when they missed the uprights on what would have been a winning field goal. When your mind focuses on things like this, it is impossible to find success in the present. We see this all the time in sports. Athletes always think about their past failures and turn what would have been one bad at-bat into a terrible homestand. One way you can prevent this from happening to you is to learn how to master the practice of mindfulness.
In this chapter, we will explain what mindfulness is and how it helps you in your daily life. We will also discuss some of the benefits of mindfulness. Finally, we will describe some strategies you can use to achieve mindfulness.
Mindfulness Generally
As briefly stated above , mindfulness is a mental state in which a person thinks of nothing but the present moment. It is when you can let go of the past and forget worrying about the future. However, mindfulness goes beyond that. It is a state of mind where you focus on where you are, who you are, and what you are doing. You should not be concerned with the how
or why.
It is often the how and why that makes our lives complicated. When we are constantly trying to ascribe meaning to every action, thought, and sensation, we are not able to enjoy the present moment. When you practice mindfulness, the goal is to learn how to block out and ignore all external stimuli. There are a variety of ways in which you can practice and enjoy mindfulness. We will discuss the more common methods of achieving mindfulness
