George Stephanopoulos Biography - BOYD MEDIA

    Introduction

When we think of George Stephanopoulos, the image of a poised and articulate man delivering the morning news or moderating political debates often comes to mind. But behind that polished exterior lies a story filled with ambition, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. George’s journey from a young boy in Fall River, Massachusetts, to a household name in American media is as captivating as it is inspiring.

Born on February 10, 1961, George Robert Stephanopoulos grew up in a close-knit Greek-American family. His father, Robert George Stephanopoulos, was a Greek Orthodox priest, and his mother, Nickolitsa Nikki Gloria, worked as the director of the national news service of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. This deeply religious and culturally rich upbringing instilled in George a strong sense of community and a drive to make a meaningful impact on the world.

From an early age, George showed an insatiable curiosity and a passion for learning. He excelled in his studies, which eventually led him to Columbia University. There, he majored in political science and graduated summa cum laude in 1982. It was during these formative years that George began to shape his future, immersing himself in the study of politics and governance. His time at Columbia wasn’t just about hitting the books; it was where he honed his debating skills and developed a nuanced understanding of political strategy.

George’s academic achievements didn’t stop there. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, one of the most prestigious academic honors, which took him to Balliol College, Oxford. At Oxford, he earned a Master of Arts in Theology, further broadening his intellectual horizons. This period overseas not only refined his academic prowess but also exposed him to a diverse range of perspectives, enhancing his analytical skills and preparing him for the multifaceted world of American politics.

The turning point in George's career came in 1988 when he joined the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis. Although Dukakis didn’t win the presidency, George's work on the campaign caught the attention of key political figures, marking the beginning of his meteoric rise in the world of politics. He soon found himself as one of the youngest and most influential advisors in Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign.
