ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Special thanks to the Creative Writing department at the University of California, Riverside. I graduated in 2020, and every professor and human there is amazing. I remember entering college, not knowing what to expect as many of us feel when starting a new journey. The guidance and compassion I received from this department is something I will never forget and hold onto dearly as an artist. Besos, before it received a name, has been in the works since late 2018, and early 2019. Thank you to my professors; Sara Borjas, Michael Jayme, Kate Anger, Allison White, and Joshua Hardina for believing in my writing and providing me resources to become a stronger writer. I want to take time to thank the members of The Verbal Coliseum, my gratitude goes to Devany Harden and Lauren Marquez for welcoming me to the space and inspiring me. More inspiration and thanks to Ruth Madrid and Chelsea Ramirez, two bold creatives that taught me a lot. Lastly, much love and gratitude to Efren Castro, they’re the editor for this project. In 2020, I reached out to them to help me proofread and provide feedback. During in days of this pandemic where I gave up on the book, Efren kept me on check not only as a friend, but as my creative coach. Thank you.
WORDS FROM THE BESOS TEAM
My name is Cassidi Mignuolo and I had the amazing opportunity of being a literary assistant for the stunning poetry collection, ‘Besos (Kisses)’. I have recently graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Economics. Although my career aspirations are far from the literary world, I wanted to expand my knowledge with this project and challenge myself to do something a bit different. I can confidently say that these goals have been achieved and then some. I want to thank Celeste for being an incredible light in this journey and inspiring me with her courage to be so vulnerable with her writing. This is a phenomenal collection of works and I look forward to seeing how the literary world embraces her in the future!
-Cassidi
My name is Efren Castro and I’m the editor for ‘Besos,’ I am a poet, zine-maker, and MFA student currently studying creative writing at UC Riverside. Being able to have the privilege of working on this project was such an amazing learning experience for me. I’ve gotten to know Celeste so intimately through this experience and I want to thank her for being so vulnerable with me and her work. This collection from Celeste is raw and honest, I hope her words find a home within you.

your trauma is valid
and
you will rise
the sensations throughout
your body
will receive healing
from the shattered
parts of your soul
our pain
the
trauma is unwanted
and has placed us
in unsafe environments
that challenge our strength
we use our power
and together we rise

together we rise // Besos-C.A. Gomez
my healing is an art form
vivid and human
cultivated by my own pace
my body gives birth to all these memories
still and sturdy as a canvas
the paintbrush is a bandage
painting every creak and patching it into something much
more beautiful than anything you’ve ever seen
my body is the album of work you see
the portfolio you reread
