    Synopsis of Book II

    Rise in the Deep

Aterrible darkness has infected the lands with evil. Malice and hate have spread their way deep into the hearts of the people in the kingdoms of the world, which have now fallen into chaos and ruin. The fate of all loom in the twilight of this great evil and rests in the hands of a brave few. This is where we find Luminous and Aurora, as their company embark on a quest to find the Legacy Stone fragments. Though once whole, it was split apart by the dark lord, Malignant. The company has traveled to Forged Reach, seeking the council of the dwarves in hopes of repairing their sacred stone. The company decides to split up after searching for days with no sign of the dwarves. Searching on his own, Luminous finds Emir, a dwarven princess. He mistakes her for his younger sister, Rebecca. Frightened, Emir fights Luminous.

After a brief encounter, Luminous bests Emir, breaking her battle-axe. Heartbroken, she starts to cry, having no weapon to compete in the tournament at Forged Reach—her sole purpose for making the trip. Luminous knows he is to blame and gives Emir his weapon, a crud horn from a mighty beast. Emir recognizes the weapon and knows that Luminous must be the Harbinger Slayer. She promises to help Luminous into the city, and even to help him with his search for his companions. Within the city’s walls, Luminous learns the dwarves can repair the Legacy Stone, and that the champion of the tournament will receive a fragment from the very stone they have been searching for. Luminous and Emir continue their search for two days, but still find no trace of his friends.

The tournament began, and Emir persuades Luminous to accompany her as a guest. He agrees, deciding it would be better to wait for her to continue his search. While spectating in the arena, Luminous finds his companions, but realizes they have been taken prisoner by the dwarven prince and bound for execution. A battle ensues and Luminous forces the dwarves to concede. As recompense for Prince Thalyn’s treatment of the elves, King Durrus decides to give the fragment to Aurora. The company also learns the Legacy Stone can be repaired with the Grim-Rose, but this item can only be found at Winterfell within the second kingdom of the dwarves. With the first piece of the Legacy Stone in hand, Emir leads the company deep into the snow-covered mountains toward their new destination.

Upon reaching the city, they find Winterfell in ruins. There, the company faces off with orc soldiers and a ghost of a dead king. After vanquishing the ghost of her father, Emir learns the secrets of her father’s crown and the overwhelming weight of such a burden. As the sole proprietor of the Ember maker name, it is now up to her to reclaim her throne and take back her kingdom. Though the company was victorious, they found all the vials containing the Grim-Rose destroyed. With heavy hearts, they leave the dwarven realm to discover a human disguised as an orc. Faelyn tells the company the location to another fragment of the Legacy Stone and leads them to the Cave of Sorrows.

Worried about her kin, Emir stubbornly heads back to Forged Reach. The company decides to go with her. There, they find the dwarven king dead killed by his son, Prince Thalyn. Now all but one dwarf belong to the evil mage, Malignant. Spotted, they are pursued by orcs and dwarves into a series of secret tunnels. Deep underground they evade the enemy, but soon find themselves in peril when a trap is sprung. Confined in a dark room, water begins to pour into the chamber. Now, it’s up to Luminous and Aurora to save them. Barely able to escape with their lives, they use an underground stream to connect with a river and get out to safety. The company swims to shore and pushes forward to the Cave of Sorrows.

Deep within the hollow, an ancient beast woke. Unable to gain any ground using magic, Luminous changes tactics. He talks to the dragon and gives him something that he never had. A friend. With a compromise of compassion, Luminous becomes an equal to Ash-Ronn, the last of the mighty dragons, and parts with the second Legacy Stone fragment. However, Luminous soon finds that his new friend comes with a hefty price. In exchange for the fragment, Luminous promises Ash-Ronn that he will supply the necessary mana for him to become whole again. Luminous absorbs the dragon and like a ravenous parasite, Ash-Ronn feeds upon Luminous’ body, forcing the company to spend three days and nights continuously using magic to heal him. Finally, well enough to travel, Luminous and the company embark to Dragonhold to rendezvous with their allies. There they hope to uncover the location to the third and final piece of the Legacy Stone.

While on the road, the company is ambushed by a pack of Volga-Roth wolves and a powerful mage. As Luminous’ eyes fall upon the twisted and confused soul standing in front of him, they begin to sparkle. Shocked, he gazes back into the eyes of a familiar face completely frozen. At long last, he had found his darling little sister. Drawing near to embrace her, Keilyn, a faithful companion of Luminous steps between them. That’s when it happened, when his faithful comrade fell, grasping onto a mortal wound. His sister Rebecca, a human incapable of mage-craft, held onto a shifting blade made of dark magic, and imbedded into her chest was the last fragment. Their last hope for survival. A battle ensues and the company is forced to retreat through the forest. While fighting for their lives, the company is separated. Now, Aurora and Delfarious must help the wounded Luminous and Keilyn, while Elwryth and Emir stay behind to cover their retreat.

During the battle, Elwryth is blindsided with betrayal when Emir sides with her kin. She is forced to flee alone and jump into a raging river to keep from being captured, but not before being shot with an arrow. Unable to swim, Elwryth sinks. Just before she drowns, a friendly hand pulls her to the surface. Faelyn, a new companion, saves her. Together they swim to shore, and he tends to her wound. They both hide in the forest from Emir and the pursuing dwarves. While Elwryth and Faelyn dodge the gaze of Emir and her soldiers, Luminous and the rest of the company carefully make their way through the forest, evading the enemy.

Due to Keilyn’s and Luminous’s injuries, they seek shelter in an abandoned cabin. While Aurora keeps watch, Delfarious confronts Luminous about only wanting the Legacy Stone for its untold power. Luminous admits to the accusations, but only with the intent to help the elves defeat his brother, Malignant. Keilyn interrupts them and reminds the two why they are fighting, that they must stay the course, and endure for the sake of their cause—to free the world from the rule of a tyrant. As Keilyn draws his last breath, an elf confesses his affection for a lonely dwarf.

With tension running high, mixed emotions stir in each of their hearts and a shadow begins to rise. Luminous finds himself torn between his heart’s desire and the cost of completing their quest, knowing the only way to acquire the last Legacy Stone fragment is to take it from his darling little sister. With the loss of their comrade, the company heads to Dragonhold with their enemy close behind them, seeking their companions and help from their allies.

    Note on Text

Part three of the Diligently Screaming saga was written for those who stubbornly face the vicissitudes of life and continue to push forward. It is meant for those who dare to stare back into the eyes of fate and embrace what they see. They recognize the reflection in fate’s piercing gaze as something that could come to pass—a mere glimpse of what could be. It is meant for those who continue to travel down their own path and try to forge an existence achieved by their own hand, knowing that they may never gaze upon those envisioned dreams. For it is when we continue to strive forward against all reason, despite the imposition or regardless of the outcome, and embrace the chaos found that true purpose will begin to surface. It is here, amidst the looming chaos within the confronted hardships and through the adversity faced that something begins to pull and tug deep within. This fleeting feeling then becomes the very reason why we persist and continue to drive forward—and that is hope.

Here, in these small windows of time, it is purpose that gets set into motion through action and has always come down to a singular, pivotal moment. A crucial and yet simple factor that will eventually define us all—Choice. After all, it is through the path of uncertainty that the light begins to take its shape and become the very road beneath the footsteps of resolve. It is where the strength of character is measured and is where the only comfort ever provided is found within the quiet isolation of one’s own thought. It is meant for those who still seek out the bright, iridescent hues of light among the prevailing dark. For even in the darkest of nights or in the blackest of voids, there is still light. It awaits eagerly to be found, enduring with a propensity of persistence as it lingers. One just has to learn how to see it.

Some of you are already familiar with Aurorous Nacreous, our whimsical guide, as well as the account of a half-breed and his faithful companions whose tale has become a legend. My goal is to shed light upon the actions taken and reveal the choices that were made. This is a story of hope, during a period marked by an evil mage’s reign, and where only the darkness prevails. It is a place where the determination of the heart begins to fade, and shades of black begin to influence the aspirations of the soul. It takes place through the span of time, in eons long ago, in a world marked by magic and wonder that is matched only by the cruelty and misuse of its power. It is a place of untold mystery, where foul intentions seek to overtake the light. It has led to many warped perceptions and to generations of twisted souls.

It is here that we find Luminous and Aurora, whose whole lives had led them to the crossroads of this one moment. They lead a company of brave souls who have been thrust into a world of chaos and ruin. They have grown tired of the constant suffering along with the immeasurable sacrifices forced upon them. Within the heartache and pain stirring within their hearts, the light has begun to dwindle and fade. With no end in sight, they begin to lose what hope they had. Yet, they continue to fight the darkness, trying to change the fate imposed upon them and plunge forward where all before them have failed. Caught in the looming darkness, Luminous and the company begin to wonder if all their accomplishments had been for nothing. They have been met with a constant doubt that has led to overwhelming feelings of mistrust that have seemingly cultivated into uncertainty. Shadows have now begun to encroach upon hope’s flame, rendering its luster to a mere flicker. Through the company’s struggles, misery, and loss, they find themselves within the very depths of despair and a great need arose.

In this land of uncertainty, Luminous and his company dared to stand against it all. They look within themselves to find the light. For inside us all lies a hero buried deep within that can only be brought to the light through choice. A choice that every person must make for themselves. This is their story. A story of the legacy they left behind. They chose to place one foot in front of the other in the hope of leaving something behind worth remembering. They have waited their whole lives for a single moment, for the one chance to prove themselves, but it is what they will do in that moment that will separate them and become the reason why they will be remembered. It is here, beneath the inescapable darkness, where the light shines, and is where the company begins to see the rays of hope. After all, it is truly amazing what one person can do with a singular notion, with an unwavering faith and belief in oneself. It is here, in this place, that hearts take flight and where our journey begins.

    Foreword

    Lights Last Hope

Within the depths of anguish, it becomes easy to unwittingly let in the dark and succumb to the blight that festers within. But if the darkness is always around, then so too must be the light, for one cannot exist without the other. And though it might be hard or even seem impossible, it is seen only through the perspective that one holds. If sights are kept on what is important, a cold and sobering realization comes into focus. All the dread and lingering doubts of uncertainty that have manifested themselves deep within the synapsis of the brain are all just part of the mind and are mere fragments of the imagination brought on by the shadows of reason. After all, it is reason that ties us to this world. It is reason that guides us with little reals of inescapable truths, reminding us of the tangible and the practical. But then, there are also things such as aspirations, dreams, hope, and even love. They give rise to feelings of emotion, which provide a purpose. It is here where choice becomes important and determines the very path that is taken. We must remember that there is no need to be afraid of what lies in the dark when you have learned to control the light.

Caught on the cusp of an alluring dream and within the hopeful wishes that have yet to be realized, a clear image resonates within the heart. There is still time, here in this moment. The only thing standing in the way of those hopes and dreams is the self. For destiny is but a mere word. A simple justification created by those who lack the courage to follow their heart. In fact, destiny can be molded. It can be changed through the strength of will and determination. For if hope comes from the aspiring imagination to reach beyond its capabilities, then would it not be fitting that all the lingering doubts and lack of conviction are only the failed attempts thrust upon us by others. It is those who compliment and encourage with half a smile, scoffing at those things held most dear that doubt. They laugh not because they do not believe in individual capacity for obtaining those dreams, but because they have learned to give up on their hopes and dreams long ago. Though there is still a glimmer of light cascading through the darkness within their hearts, they can no longer see it. They can only perceive the rationale proof offered by reason.

The difference is simple. Very few people choose to walk the lonely path of self-resolve and listen to their beating hearts. Yet there are some, like Luminous and the brave company, who have realized that they are only defeated when they choose to give up. In order to change the fate that has been forced upon the shoulders of the innocent, they must choose to keep trudging forward and walk the path created by their own hand. It is here, in the faith of self-resolve, that our story takes place. It is something that lies within and happens in the darkness when seeking the light. After all, when you are alone, what is it that beckons to you? What calls to you and gravitates toward the very consciousness of the mind? Are they desires, or are they grounded in the logic of what is and not what could be?

It begins with a ray of hope that soon sparks into light. Though small and hard to see, it is something carried and always there. So, remember when the whispers of the dark begin to creep into the mind and penetrate the thoughts of one’s purpose, a spec of light is born. Though it can take many forms like our hopes and dreams, our ambitions, and even our aspirations, it is always there. It shines against the void and glimmers through the darkness. It tries to change our very perspective, reflecting the little bits of truth that lie within us all. The light is here to guide us and remind us of only one thing. An undeniable and fundamental truth essential to us all. We are here. We are living and breathing, and it is through the hardships that are faced when the light begins to surface so that we may feel. So that we may remember that we too are part of this world. And though we might be but a small blimp within the span of time, it is our brief, fleeting window that provides the essence of being.

If you focus on the light, you will begin to see it. You will realize that you can still grab the happiness that everyone seeks. You will simply have to make it for yourself. And no matter how far we must go to find that small piece of solidarity, once found, no one can take it. Even if that happiness can only be found within a distant memory, created within our own minds, and lies deep within the hallow crevasses of the imagination where only you can see. It is yours to keep.

Do not fret though if you cannot see it, for I can take you there. To a place where we belong made of beauty and wonder. But you must be willing to go. If you are, I can show you everything. Dreams of happiness, hopeful wishes, and even the aspirations of the soul. Side by side we will go through a memory of illusion that belongs to a distant past and lies only within the imagination. A reality made into form and is the very place where our journey begins.

    Chapter I

    Displaced Souls

Luminous staggered in silence, carefully placing his footsteps upon the uneven ground. He could feel the dirt and earth beneath his busy feet as he stubbornly pushed forward. He swayed on his legs with his eyes focused straight ahead of him. They fell upon the thin frame of a slender physique, trudging just in front of him. His breath was short and heavy. He felt the sweat upon his brow and the labored breathing within his chest. His throat was dry and parched, but he tirelessly continued to stalk the object of his affection, admiring her beauty. His gaze began to narrow. His eyes fixated upon each delicate movement of the slim body just out of his reach. He relentlessly pursued her, knowing time was short. His eyes were marked with a singular purpose with only one goal in mind. He purposely placed each footstep with a precise action, taking his weary body closer to his destination. He kept to the dark shadows that lingered just beneath the trees while he cautiously made his way through the dense underbrush of the forest floor. With all his effort, Luminous quietly inched his way closer to her without making a single sound. Gradually, he crept through the underbrush shrouded in shaded silhouettes, converging upon her position. Slowly, he snuck closer and closer to her position while the rays of the morning sun began to break over the horizon. The bright beams outlined her body in a faint silhouette, surrounding and emphasizing the features of her delicate body. With his gaze persistently pursuing her in the dim light, he carefully came within an arm’s reach. His eyes began to glisten, as he watched the strands of her long brown hair sway in the morning breeze, shifting steadily as it gently brushed against her face. Luminous soon found his mind shifting to the first time that he met her. He could remember every detail of that fateful day and was quickly lost in a memory of the past. Though fatigue gripped at him, he focused his mind on this one task. His body was weak and weary from the long journey. His legs heavy and drained. As he pushed forward, they began to give way and he found himself teetering on his feet. Just before he collapsed, he lunged forward with all his might, and reached out to take hold of the one thing he held most dear.

Aurora! He whispered as he fell. We must…

What are you doing? A voice rang out. You are too close! Delfarious shouted with a blank expression on his face. One hand pushed against Luminous’s body, while the other pushed against his face as he looked at him. His eyes fell on Luminous’s blank stare as he tried to remain upright on his feet. Delfarious extended his arms, trying to create as much space between the two of them as possible. I said back off! Delfarious reiterated grimacing.

It was too late though. Luminous’s body had reached its limit and the bulk of his body fell into Delfarious. Unable to bear his weight, Delfarious fell, landing on his back with Luminous on top of him. Luminous looked up at Aurora from the ground. His arm and hand outstretched toward her, trying desperately to speak, but his breath gave him no words to express his thoughts.

That’s it! Delfarious stated angrily as his hand searched the ground for something to fend off his aggressor. With one hand pushing against Luminous’s chest, he swung a rock with his other hand, hitting Luminous on the side of his head. As the rock met Luminous’s face, it crumbled into dust.

We must hurry! Luminous muttered, placing his hand over Delfarious’s mouth. Shhh, he stated with one finger over his lips as he gazed down at him.

Delfarious’s eyes began to fill with fear, realizing he could not move. His face contorted with sheer trepidation. What do you mean we must hurry? he asked, in a whispered uneasy voice. What do you plan on doing? he murmured between Luminous’s fingers.

It will all be over soon, Luminous stated with a gentle smile.

What will be over soon? Delfarious asked in a slight panic. Aurora…you want to help me out here?

I don’t know, the two of you look quite cozy down there, Aurora stated, as she looked down at both of them, struggling to get to their feet. I can always leave you two alone for a while if you like.

Delfarious’s eyes widened as he stared up at Luminous. You wouldn’t? He stated, looking up at Aurora from his back. This is no time for games. And you, he shifting his gaze to Luminous, pull yourself together…and get off! He shouted, shaking him by the shoulders to wake him from his daze.

It’s not his fault, Aurora said as she watched Delfarious struggle to no avail. He has a high fever and is beyond exhausted.

Honestly, out of all the elves and other races in this world, why did you have to choose him? Delfarious asked, picking himself up.

Because out of all the elves and other races in this world, he excepts me for who I am, she, stared at him smiling. It’s not because of my status as the princess of Tarethiel, or for monetary gain. He does not want to be with me to get closer to my father or to elevate his status within the kingdom. He sees me for who I am. And in my greatest time of need, who was the only one willing to come to my aid? She continued to stare down and watch the half-elf and half-human struggle to his feet.

    Luminous, Delfarious answered in exasperation.

When everyone else in this world stood by and did nothing, who was the one who helped me defeat Glanduil and save our city? she asked, looking down on the poor misunderstood half-breed. Aurora glanced over at Delfarious with a piercing glare.

Okay, okay, I get it, Delfarious said as he rolled his eyes. He complements you and you complete him.

Exactly! Aurora nodded, eyeing Luminous. A tender smile spread across her face as she gazed down at her companion. And he is pretty hot with his shirt off.

Delfarious’s face turned red. I think that’s a little too much information, princess. Remember, we talked about this. You said you would not cross that line. Yet here you stand flirting with it.

Just look at all those muscles, Aurora teased, knowing Delfarious would not stand for it. And the way the sweat glistens upon his skin and sparkles in the morning sun.

And there you go, crossing that line, Delfarious cringed with his head buried in his hand.

Oh, come on, I’m only messing around with you. Well, sort of. She chuckled slightly, knowing she was speaking the truth.

Well, I think that’s about all of that I can handle for one day, Delfarious pointed as he shook his head. I’ll be over there if you need me, he quickly moved, putting a little distance between the two of them and himself.

Luminous looked up from the ground. His eyes searching for Aurora. As their gaze met, they were drawn to each other. In that moment, he lost himself within the golden hues of saturated color that sparkled within the irises of her eyes. Captivated, they led him to the lustrous shine of her soft lips that gently beckoned him to a quiet place, where he felt the tender embrace of her warm smile. Aurora stared back into the subtle hues of blue as she reached out and gently embraced his cheek with her hand.

Aurora! He whispered under his breath as his heart took flight and began to race.

I know, my love, Aurora stared, caught in his gaze.

You know, you should smile more often, he said, looking at her.

And why is that? she asked, kneeling above him.

So that you can spread that warmth into this world, Luminous answered obviously distracted.

What is with you today? Aurora asked, slightly blushing.

We must be careful, he said, taking her hand. I can feel them. They draw near, he whispered as he reached out with his fingertips and gently tucked the long strands of her hair behind her ear.

I know, I can feel them too, she, placed her palm on his hand to feel its warmth upon her cheek.

From which direction do they approach? Delfarious asked, searching the nearby woods.

They are all around us! Luminous stated in a serious tone, trying to enjoy the moment.

How many are there? Delfarious asked, approaching them from the rear. I do not see any orcs, or the Volga-Roth for that matter. Those damn orcs! They have been chasing us for days. Maybe they are spread thin, and their numbers are few. If so, I think we can take them.

Luminous turned and smiled at his dear friend, shaking his head. They will come from all sides with overwhelming numbers. He turned his attention to the sky and drew in a deep breath. I do hope the others are faring better than we are.

Looking up into the morning sky, Luminous felt a raindrop upon his cheek. He watched the turning clouds in the gray skies as they changed shape and moved across the horizon. As the sky grew dark, a gentle rain began to cascade down upon the leaves of the trees around them, beating against each one with a subtle rhythm that began to repeat. Long streaks of bluish light soon began to sporadically leap from cloud to cloud and intermittently flash overhead. Within the lightening’s irregular intervals, a quiet silence began to grow. The air became stale. The only sound that could be heard sprung from the rustling of leaves, blowing in the gusting winds that soon became the beat within their hearts.

Prepare yourselves! Luminous commanded as he began to investigate the dense forest of trees around them. Here they come.

Aurora drew her sword and stood with her back to Luminous, facing the never-ending sea of green that laid before her. Delfarious could tell from the smell of the soured air that Luminous was right. Their enemy would soon be upon them. He drew back his bow and nocked an arrow.

Luminous scanned the tree line for any sign of movement. Then, a multitude of dark blotches began to ascend into the air just above the trees from a short distance. Projectiles. He felt for the arrows, concentrating upon the volley of fire aimed in their direction. A dim light sparked at his fingertips while his hand began to shake uncontrollably as he expelled every ounce of energy he could muster. But nothing happened. Exhausted, he fell to his knees and began to breathe heavily.

Don’t push yourself! Aurora said in concern, glancing at him through the corner of her eye. You’ll need your strength to flee from this place.

Aurora raised her sword above her head and stared at the projectiles quickly descending upon them. Slicing down, a loud and thunderous boom blasted from the tip of her sword as a vicious spark jetted through the air. An intense heat radiated from the beam of light, as it soared through the air. It cut through the rain, creating a visible tunnel free from any precipitation, leaving little pockets of smoke and steam within its wake. Upon contact, the arrows were swallowed in the surge of her beam and were instantly incinerated or knocked off course. Aurora stood at the ready, the tip of her sword glowing bright red, knowing that this feeble attack was just the beginning.

You concentrate on the enemy forces. I’ll help Luminous get to his feet, Delfarious said, kneeling beside him. He quickly placed both hands upon Luminous’ back. As they began to glow, Luminous could feel a warm sensation spread through his entire body.

Thanks, old friend, Luminous stated, staring at the ground, You have been a tremendous help as of late.

I told you this would happen. That absorbing the dragon would leave you in this state, Delfarious told him, as he continued to share his energy with Luminous. It really is a miracle, that it hasn’t killed you yet.

Luminous absently nodded, focusing on the adverse feeling swirling within his chest. He had all but forgotten the unbearable sensation. The absolute disgust within the desperation of helplessness. It had been some time since the days that he could not even muster the strength to fight back.

My body is still too weak, he thought, knowing that he could barely stand. Grimacing, he balled up his fist and looked over at Aurora. With all his heart, he wanted to help her. Please, Ash-Ronn last of the noble dragons, we need your strength. With your help, we can overcome anything.

It won’t be much longer now, a voice whispered within Luminous’ mind. And I am truly sorry, my young friend, but I still need time to make myself whole again, Ash-Ronn responded.

Luminous closed his weary eyes. I understand. So, take all the energy from me that you need, but you must hurry. Time has now grown short, and the moment of action is upon us.

The sound of light footsteps pressing against the ground soon echoed in the forest and was accompanied by the cracking of small branches and the rustling of bushes. Delfarious turned, facing the direction of their foe with his bow drawn ready to fire. As a dark silhouette emerged from the forest, Luminous pushed against Delfarious’s bow forcing it down. Their eyes fell upon a small, scared child. She stopped dead in her tracks with widening eyes as she stared at Luminous.

Please! The small child pleaded. Won’t you help me? she asked as tears began streaming down her face. The forest is littered with gruesome creatures. I barely managed to escape their grasp. Please, won’t you help me?

What is your name? Luminous asked with pity.

My name is Alysse. Please sir, help me?

Fear not, Child, as long as you’re with us no harm will come to you, Luminous responded, standing.

Take cover! Delfarious shouted. And watch your right flank! He interrupted, shooting his bow. His arrow made its way through the air and into the body of an orc as dozens more began to surround them.

Alysse ran to Luminous and rapped her arms around his waist, embracing him. She looked up into his face, happy to have found a kind soul who was willing to help her. Then, from the tree line, several orcs scurried about like rodents and rushed upon the company with their weapons at the ready. Aurora turned and set her sights on the woods before her. Slowly, she walked toward her enemy, closing the gap between them. Gracefully, she carried herself amidst her enemy wielding only her sword. As she reached her first foe, the orc began to swing his blade. His sword fell short of Aurora though, for her blade had already pierced through his armor and flesh. The orc’s comrades quickly surrounded her and in unison, attacked her simultaneously. Her eyes narrowed, focusing with a purpose. The orcs began to hack and slash wildly at her, jabbing and thrusting their spears and swords. But to the orcs’ surprise, they hit nothing. With precise movements, Aurora dodged the orc’s attacks and cut them down one by one. With only a few movements, she had slain a dozen adversaries without breaking a sweat. Yet, more orcs hastily ran at her from the forest. Aurora crouched in her stance and held her sword above her head. Her eyes focused on one orc in particular. He was taller than the rest. He had more muscle, doubling the size of the others. With her eyes glued to him, she watched him raise his hand and motion to the rest of his companions to stop.

Seems like the she-elf has some talent after all, he mocked, while drawing his sword.

If you value your lives, you will flee this place, Aurora warned.

Behind you! Delfarious shouted. To your left…no, your right! He directed, pulling back the string on his bow.

Will you shut it! Aurora shouted, looking at him. I don’t need you flapping your mouth!

I’m only trying to help, he responded, releasing his arrow. He watched the projectile as it neared the orc commander. With a subtle movement of his blade, he watched the arrow splinter against his sword, blocking it.

The best way for you to help me is to leave, Aurora stated with her eyes fixated on her enemy. Now go, I will be right behind you.

Leave, she says, the orc laughed. Did you hear that, boys? The little she-elf speaks. The orc’s bloodshot eyes stared at Aurora. You dare kill half of my subordinates and then have the gall to give me orders?

Aurora slightly smiled. Last chance. Leave or die where you stand.

The orc’s face twisted with anger. I shall kill you slowly and look forward to your screams for such impudence, the orc commander stated, giving the order to charge.

As the orc squadron closed in on her, she stepped toward her targets. With a fluid like motion, Aurora bent and twisted around the orc’s attacks as she carefully swung her blade. Metal clashed against metal as she parried and deflected the orc’s blows. One by one, the orcs fell cut down by an elvish blade until only a few remained. With a short burst, she slew the remaining orcs, thrusting her sword into the torso of the last one. A mistake she knew all too well. Now, it would be impossible for her to dodge, or deflect an attack from the orc commander. She watched his blade as it quickly descended upon her. From the corner of her eye, she watched a smile spring to his lips as his blade neared her. They both knew that he had her. With her sword stuck in the body of the orc, there was nothing she could do to deflect his blow. Aurora smirked as she raised her hand, pointing it at the commander. A bright light emitted from her palm as a ball of energy burst toward her foe. The orc commander’s eyes widened as the pulsating orb struck him in the chest. The attack pushed him backward and pinned him against a tree. Aurora placed her foot on the orc in front of her, kicking him as she pulled her sword from his body and pointed her blade at the orc commander.

It would appear, that you have lost your will to fight, she looked through the hole in his chest, which continued through the truck of the tree behind him.

That’s not fair, the orc groaned, spitting out blood. That’s cheating, he murmured, coughing. He looked at the ground upon the twisted faces of his entire squad who had all perished in a matter of seconds.

Aurora stood in front of him as she flung her sword toward the ground. She watched as orc blood splattered against the muddy surface. Cheating? she asked, surprised. But there were far more of you and only one of me. A she-elf as you put it. She raised her sword above her head as she looked at the commander. Did you really expect anything less, fighting a mage? Besides, did I not give you a chance to leave? You really have no one to blame here but yourself. She looked into his dim eyes. Tell me orc, how does it feel, knowing that I will be the last thing you will ever see.

Hatred spread across the orc’s face as he strained his entire being to stretch out his arm toward her. We will be avenged, he grumbled with his dying breath.

In a mere instant, Aurora swung her blade, severing the orc’s arm and head from his body before he could touch her. She turned and looked around her at the bodies lying on the ground. It had not taken her long to make her way through the enemy ranks and defeat over two dozen orcs and their leader. She breathed deeply as she looked high above the canopy of trees and into the clouds. She cleared her mind, concentrating on the raindrops that fell against her face and the cool breeze blowing upon her skin. Aurora stood in the open and took in the quite calm of the forest. She breathed in the damp air and exhaled slowly.

Do not think I haven’t notice you! She said in a calm voice. I could smell the foul stench of those beasts from a mile away.

Her piercing eyes fell upon several Volga-Roth making their way through the trees. The wild fiends ravenously growled, baring their sharp teeth. Saliva dripped from overgrown fangs that protruded past their lips and kept the brutes from closing their hug maws. The smell of wet dogs and tainted meat perforated the once clean air. At the sight of their slain comrades, the orcs riding upon the backs of the beasts like mounted steeds, let out a fierce battle cry.

You will pay dearly for spilling their blood! An orc shouted as he began to charge at Aurora.

Ignoring the orc’s unwitting act of boldness, Aurora set her sights on the score of beasts behind him. With her sword in one hand, she raised the other, firing a plethora of orbs that whizzed past the charging orc’s head. As the orbs neared the Volga-Roth, they exploded, sending mud and dirt flying into the air. The debris created a dense fog that made it hard to see. Trees cracked and groaned from the explosions as their limbs fell to the earth, crushing the orcs underneath their weight. With the orc’s line of sight obstructed and amidst the chaos, Aurora knew she had bought herself a little time.

There was only one thing she had to worry about now. As the lone orc neared her position, she waited to move. As the Volga-Roth opened its mouth to bite down on her, she stepped to the side. With a quick motion, she sent its head tumbling upon the ground, decapitating it. The beast staggered as its body went limp and fell to its side, pinning the orc on its back to the ground. She then began to concentrate and funnel all her energy into her sword. As the dust began to clear, she saw the orcs on their Volga-Roth, trying to collect themselves. She surveyed the landscape, noticing a few orcs had been crushed or impaled, killed by the falling limbs of the trees.

Get her! An orc yelled as he gave the signal to charge. I want her head!

Aurora smiled, leering at him. Then come take it, if you dare!

The Volga-Roth began their assault, with their weapons drawn. Their spears and pikes aimed directly at her. Aurora did not budge though, nor did she give an inch. Instead, she waited for them to draw near. When she could see the lifeless emptiness within their dull eyes, she thrust her sword into the ground. Upon contact, she released the accumulation of energy she had been gathering. A bright light pulsated from her sword into the soil of the grassy terrain, creating a massive shock wave that spread through the ground. Fragments of soil flew into the air while she funneled her energy into the landscape around her. Raindrops that fell from the sky hissed and crackled, as they beat against the turning earth. The wet and soggy soil instantly dried, hardening while the puddles of water evaporated from the surface due to the heat of her blade. The surge of energy created a rippling wave of destruction that splintered out in front of her. As the earth shifted and moved, the ground gave way, dislodging the once stable dirt beneath the Volga-Roth’s feet. The orcs, riding upon their beasts of war, had unintentionally charged right into her attack. It was now impossible for the four-legged beasts to stand. The clumsy creatures stumbled, as the ground sank, stopping them in their tracks.

Luminous smiled as he sat in the cold, watching Aurora masterfully outwit the scores of enemy soldiers that stubbornly faced just a single elf. With his eyes, he carefully calculated the strength of the enemy’s remaining forces and knew that they didn’t stand a chance against the wraith of his beloved. He knew that very few could stand among the strength of her resolve and shoulder the weight of such ferocity. She could easily rival and even perhaps surpass her father, the great elven king. He knew she had more cause than most to hate them. It fueled her with a purpose that compelled her and drove her to action. After everything they had been through, nothing would stop her from achieving her goal. Nothing would stop her from saving her kingdom or succeeding in reclaiming the last of the Legacy Stone fragments. But first, they would have to defeat the powerful darkness that had infected this world and the dark lord Malignant.

Aurora watched her comrades as they disappeared from her sight and hoped that they would find safety within the thickets surrounding them. With her eyes upon her enemy, she looked out upon the scattered Volga-Roth and orcs, knowing she was pressed for time. She knew that she had to stop the orcs and their vile beasts if the company was going to make it to their destination. With a little luck, she hoped to run into the rest of her companions while making their way to Dragonhold. With the help of Elwryth’s bow and Emir’s sword, she felt that nothing could stand in their way. Even Faelyn would be a welcoming sight, though she did not know the ability of his skills like she knew those of her other companions.

While her foes tried to recover from the shifting earth, Aurora closed her eyes and exhaled. She felt her hair gently brush against her face in the morning breeze and the cool drops of rain that fell upon her skin. Calmly, Aurora continued concentrating on her surroundings. Breathing deeply, she smelled the wet earth beneath her feet. She opened her eyes, and through golden-brown hues, stared at her adversaries who now began to surround her on all sides. With her palm to the sky, she slowly raised her hand above the ground. As her hand rose from her side, the ground rumbled and began to shake violently. The trees around them began to fall, uprooted from their base, and plunged to the ground with dull thunderous thuds that echoed in the distance. The orcs looked at one another with fear etched within their eyes, knowing there was still some distance between them and their foe. In an effort to stop her, some orcs set their sights on her. They began to heave their spears while others began to shoot arrows from their bows. As the sharp edges tumbled through the rain and began to fall toward her, Aurora clasped her hand into a fist. Upon her command, the earth shuddered and exploded upward, creating a wall of rock and stone around her. Acting as a barrier, the spears splintered, and the arrows broke as they hit the rocks hard surface around her.

Aurora continued to funnel her energy into the stone and raised her other hand. In an instant, the stone broke free from its encapsulated prison and began to levitate around her. Massive chucks of stone soon began to circle her, protecting her from the constant bombardment from the orcs barrage of projectiles. With a deep trench separating them, Aurora knew her enemies could not close the gap between them, making their ferocious beasts practically useless. Staring at the Volga-Roth and their masters, she began to fling the rotating rocks surrounding her at her enemies. One by one, the boulders flew through the air, hitting their marks. Screams of anguish began to fill the forest floor as the orcs and their depraved pets tried to outrun the inevitable. The boulders crashed through the
