      The darkness swallowed Millfield as if the shadows conspired to hide the truth. Aiden Brighthand, his eyes blazing with a ferocity that bordered on madness, stumbled through the silent streets; the only sound was his ragged breathing. The dutchy, once lit by the warm glow of torches and lanterns, now resembled a charnel house, its stones smeared with the blood of the fallen.

      Aiden's face was a map of exhaustion and anguish, the starved look of a man who'd lost everything in one fell swoop. His eyes, once bright as the sun, now resembled two wounds, raw and bleeding, their pupils sunken into the ivory of his skull. His father, the legendary Rowan Brighthand, had been killed by treachery, his champion's mantle brutally ripped from Aiden's shoulders.
