Don’t You Want All This Value?
Value; think about that word. What does it mean to you? Is it something you desire? I tend to desire value in absolutely everything. It is interesting how widely variable people’s opinions of value are. Let’s start with some of the ways Merriam-Webster defines value. Value (noun) – 1) the monetary worth of something 2) a fair return or equivalent in goods, services or money for something exchanged 3) relative worth, utility, or importance 4) something (such as a principle or quality) intrinsically valuable or desirable 5) a numerical quantity that is assigned or is determined by calculation or measurement. Value (verb) – 1) to consider or rate highly 2) to estimate or assign the monetary worth of, to rate of scale in usefulness, importance, or general worth.
Well, that was clear as mud and leaves lots of room for variability, interpretation, and individualism. I am encouraged to report it does have variability and allows for individualism. The areas where I have seen sustained success with a Lean culture shift is where folks are able to define what is value to them and ultimately to the external or internal downstream customer. Once value is defined there are so many different Lean tools and principles capable of helping you pursue that
