Chapter 1 - The Backyard
Today is the day!
shouted Jennie happily as she leapt out of bed. She ran to her bedroom window and pushed open the curtains. The sun shone brightly in the morning sky. Jennie opened the window and leaned on the sill. Resting her chin in her hands, she stared dreamily out of the window at the mimosa tree in the center of her backyard.
Pink feathered blossoms covered the tree and gently swayed in the breeze. Below each blossom clusters of long green pods bulged with seeds. Jennie had been anxiously watching the pods ripen for the past two weeks. The seeds were finally ready to be picked. Yep, today is the perfect day.
A ladybug landed on the window sill. Jennie watched as it crawled around a bit then flew off. Suddenly she became aware of the time. She raced to her closet and opened the door. Yesterday Jennie decided what she would wear for today’s special event. She pulled on the leg of a pair of Pedal Pushers on a hanger. The pants slipped to one end of the hanger and stuck. Jennie tugged harder and the wire hanger popped off the rack sending Jennie stumbling backwards. A pile of stuffed animals broke her fall and the pants, with the hanger, landed on top of her head. When Jennie sat up, she peeked out from between the pants legs. I’m glad I didn’t put away all my stuffed animals yet. It was a good place to fall; nice and soft.
Jennie stood up and sprang onto the middle of her bed. She held her pants out open in front of her and started to bounce. With each bounce, Jennie jumped higher and higher. After a few bounces, she leaped into her pants and a foot popped out of the bottom of each pant leg. Jennie yelled in amazement, Wow! I finally did it!
Jennie made one more bounce from her bed to the floor and to her closet once again. This time she pulled out a striped Sun top. It was one of her favorites. After she put on the soft cotton top, she glanced around her room. Tidying up her room was the first chore that her mother asked her to do this morning. Jennie quickly fixed the bed cover then scooped up the stuffed animals from the floor and placed them all by her bed pillow. Stuffed animals covered half of her bed. The coloring book and crayons on her desk that she used yesterday, she swiped into the top drawer. There! I’m done,
said Jennie with such pride.
Jennie,
called her mother. It’s time for breakfast.
Jennie sprinted from her bedroom and skipped down the hall toward the kitchen. When she arrived, hot oatmeal with sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top waited on the table. Good morning, sweetie,
said Jennie’s mom. You look quite interesting this morning.
I dressed myself this morning,
Jennie said proudly.
I see that,
said Jennie’s mom with a smile. But let’s get something that matches a little bit better.
Gee, I like polka dots and stripes,
moaned Jennie as her mother gently guided her back to her bedroom. Awww mom. I don’t want to change my clothes. Me and the girls are picking seeds today and I’ll be late.
Now, Jennie. Just change your clothes and we’ll have breakfast. When you’re finished, you can go.
Jennie’s mom picked out a different shirt for Jennie to wear.
Mom, I should have a full bucket of seeds this year. And I’m gonna pick the most seeds,
said Jennie with confidence.
That’s nice, sweetie,
replied her mother while handing Jennie a flowered shirt. Jennie quickly pulled the shirt over her head without unbuttoning it. Don’t be in such a rush. You’ll pop the buttons off,
said Jennie’s mom.
I always do it like this,
said Jennie. She was right; the shirt slipped on without a problem.
Jennie rushed into the kitchen and sat down at the table. She spooned a big blob of oatmeal into her mouth and gulped it down. Her mother warned her to slow down or she’d get a stomach ache. When Jennie finished eating, she jumped up from the table and rushed out of the room saying, Bye, mom.
Honey, don’t run or you’ll trip,
yelled Jennie’s mom.
Okay, mom,
shouted Jennie from the basement steps.
As Jennie ran down the steps, despite her mother’s warning. She looked over the railing and spied the bucket that she used every year for the seeds. Last week Jennie and her dad washed it out and placed it next to the clothes dryer. She grabbed the bucket and flew out the basement door.
Jennie skipped down the driveway and stopped where the blacktop met the sidewalk. She looked up at fluffy clouds floating in the blue sky. A blue bird caught Jennie’s eye as it landed on the branch of a maple tree in front of her house. Bird… tree… Oh yeah…seeds. I need to get going. Jennie ran up the street to Danielle’s house.
Jennie knocked on Danielle’s door, but didn’t wait for an answer. She ran across the lawn to Katie’s house next door and yelled up to the open window of Katie’s bedroom. Katie came to the window. I’ll be right down.
Danielle and Katie came to the door at the same time. —and stay out of that creek!
shouted Katie’s mom from inside the house. We’re not going to the creek, not today, mom,
Katie responded. She counted five seconds when her mother shouted another order, —and stay out of the woods too.
Together the girls skipped to Pam’s house. As they neared Pam's house, they could see Pam’s mother at the screen door. Squeezing in front of her mother, Pam stood holding up a big wooden spoon. Hey, look what my mom gave me,
said Pam.
Hey, that’s swell. That’s just what we need,
said Danielle.
Look after my little Pammy,
said Pam’s mother, moving the spoon aside. Annoyed, Pam rolled her eyes. Why does she have to always say that; I’m a big girl! Pam was a year younger than the other girls. But the girls didn’t care, they liked Pam.
With Pam in tow, the girls hurried to Jennie’s house. When they reached the bottom of Jennie’s driveway, they took a moment to gaze at Jennie’s backyard. From the sidewalk, they saw the top of the mimosa tree with its pink blossoms.
Ain’t it beautiful?
