    Caleb - Kate Hill

I'm a powerful and respected Alpha, but the wolf Mette covets my leadership. I'm injured when my conniving enemy challenges me.

After losing my pack and nearly my life, I go to lick my wounds in the human world, but my beloved mate Tia knows that a wolf's broken spirit can heal, and there is only one true leader of our pack.

The stench of fear hung on the hot summer air, mingling with the pungent aroma of blood and damp earth that flew beneath my racing paws. The moose fled from the woods and into a field with me at its flanks. Three other wolves formed a deadly circle of gnashing teeth and slashing claws. Leaping onto the moose’s back, I sank my teeth deep into flesh and sinew. The moose staggered to its knees.

Hot blood flowed over my tongue and down my throat. A thrill of power combined with clutching hunger sent a tremor through me and raised the coarse fur on my back. Muscles straining, I clung to the moose until it lay in a lifeless heap beneath me. I enjoyed the hunt, but I never prolonged a kill and found no satisfaction in the needless suffering of my prey.

I stepped back. The grass flattened beneath my feet as I shifted effortlessly into man form. Drenched in blood and sweat, I stood panting in the moonlight. It had been a long, exciting hunt.

My three companions also shifted to human form. Two males, using their deft human hands, cleaned the animal to carry back to our village while my beautiful mate, Tia, approached me and licked blood from my lips.

Three by yourself in one night, Tia said. I’m impressed.

Nice to know I can still impress you. I playfully smacked her firm behind.

She shrugged, her expression teasing. Only until I find another handsome Alpha.

Growling, I narrowed my eyes at her. My teeth lengthened against my lips. I grasped her shoulders and kissed her again. There is no other for you, Tia. Not while I still breathe.

She locked her arms around my neck and laughed, brushing the tip of her nose against mine. With another growl, I devoured her lips with a possessive kiss.

Are you going to help us with the kill or mate right here in the middle of the field? Mette, a tall male with shifty blue eyes, sneered.

I shot him a warning look. "I did not just hear that."

Mette glared at me with uncharacteristic persistence for five uneasy seconds before lowering his gaze in deference to me, his Alpha. Still, Mette’s clenched teeth and flexing fists revealed his agitation.

If you have a problem, we can deal with it now. I released Tia and turned to face Mette, more than ready for a challenge if he dared issue one.

Tia and the other wolves waited anxiously. The scent of my annoyance and Mette's envy permeated the air.

    There’s no problem. Mette
