    DAY 26

    DAY 27

    DAY 26

So the whole week I’ve been with Alex, I’ve only learned one confusing thing after another. These were the top three:

There’s a man known as Steve and he’s considered the hero of humans.

This Steve happens to be Alex’s father, whom Alex hasn’t seen for years.

It just so happens that Steve is also related to Herobrine. In fact, they’re brothers.

Funny how all it took was Mister Bacon mentioning the name Steve for me to get shot with an arrow, Alex captured, and everyone in Herobrine’s manor on their wits’ ends. Oh, and me getting grounded. Under normal circumstances, I probably wouldn’t have protested. But the thing is, I needed to be out there. I needed to help find Alex.

Listen, kiddo, we know you want to do your part, Marcus said. But Herobrine said you’re not allowed to go out. It’s just too dangerous. You were lucky you made it out of there last time when Agatha found you. We can’t say that about the next time.

Marcus was standing in front of the door to my room and blocking me from the hallway. There was no hint of his signature cocky grin. The black, hollow holes of his eyes glared at me as if they were going to swallow me up if I stared for too long. You’d think that would be enough to make me retreat, right?

I need to help you guys find Alex! I urged. I’m the reason she’s in this mess in the first place!

    Marcus sighed.

I really want to let you in on this, Jasper. I really do, he said. But the answer’s ‘no.’ You got really hurt and we’re lucky you didn’t die and respawn somewhere we wouldn’t be able to find you.

I lowered my head in shame. It was true. If it hadn’t been for the shattered health potion touching me, I might be alone in some desert by now.

I felt a bony hand place itself on top of my head. Marcus offered me a small smile.

I know this is hard for you, he said softly. But leave this to us. Herobrine’s going to do his best to find Steve and Alex. And if what you said is true, then Alex’s own dad wouldn’t hurt her, right?

I thought about how Steve took down the Ghast that had attacked Alex in the Nether the other day. I nodded.

    I guess you’re right, I said.

Of course I am, Marcus said while grinning. His voice went back to sounding cocky. I’m a genius as much as I am a fighter.

I managed a small chuckle. I stepped back into my room. Marcus gave me a reassuring glance and clutched the knob of the door.

Your top priority right now is to rest, Marcus said. "Agatha will be watching over you and the manor again today. She’ll call you
