    Chapter 1

    The Master of the Castle

Wolfy, do you want a little siesta and downtime? asked Fate while they were flying over the breathtaking landscape along the California coast.

It had already been two months since they left Point Reyes, and they had seen so many new places and met a few new friends along their journey. Despite a few rain showers, they moved persistently down the coastline and were ready for a couple of leisurely days. They passed Mendocino and arrived at a scenic place known as the King Range Wilderness.

It was a beautiful sunset, and it had become one of their favorite times of the day together, watching the sunlight glimmer off the ocean and the thundering sound of the waves crashing against the rocky coast.

Let’s check out that abandoned barn over there, said Fate. It was clearly a deserted barn that was missing the entry door, windows were shattered, and half of the roof was gone. The barn was standing close to a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean. There was a small beach beneath the drop-off, and some sea lions were sleeping on the shore. oh, Fate, you’re spoiling me with this castle, teased Wolfy. It’s every princess’s dream, continued Wolfy in a lively matter.

Hold on, Princess. We’re landing on the roof because this castle might turn into a pumpkin, Fate said, snickering. Both giggled at that remark, knowing this could happen.

Fate landed with caution on the ridge of the roof and gazed carefully inside the barn. They couldn’t see any danger or other critters in there, and Fate flew down to a beam that was still covered by the remaining roof. Wolfy hopped down and stretched herself and checked out her surroundings. Some rusty farm equipment and other tools left by smellies were on the ground that were completely overgrown by grass.

This will do it, Fate, said Wolfy happily. Balancing on the edge of the beam, she walked toward a small storage place that had some old hay in it.

Fate asked Wolfy if she needed food before nighttime, and Wolfy replied that she still had some berries in her little backpack and was good for the night. Fate reminded her to call for help at any sign of danger as she would not be far away. Wolfy nodded her head in agreement and unpacked the berries, making herself comfortable for the night.

Fate took off, and Wolfy was alone again. She had gotten much more comfortable with spending time alone in new places. She was grooming herself a bit after eating the berries when she heard rustling on the ground underneath her. Startled, she ran into hiding and laid on her belly and carefully scanned the ground for any movements. She spotted a strange and bigger furry monster but couldn’t make out what it was. Her heartbeat raced faster. Should she call for help, or was it too late? If this furry monster could jump and come up here, she might be better off hiding and being quiet until Fate returned instead of drawing any attention. It wasn’t a raccoon or a skunk, but it had a white stripe that was framed by two black stripes down its forehead. It wasn’t a vixen with a big bushy tail. It had a short tail like a bobcat, but it wasn’t a bobcat. What sort of furry monster was this one? It had a smaller head and a long wedged-shaped body. It had long claws on its forepaws and looked like it wouldn’t scare easily.

Q: You want to guess what it could be? Their pelts are special, and for a long time, they were hunted because the smelly ones made paint brushes and shaving brushes out of their fur. It is known as a fearless and brave fighter. Its picture is on Wisconsin’s state flag.

Suddenly, it turned its head toward Wolfy and snapped with a deep and bewildered voice, What is a rat doing in my territory?

Wolfy was totally caught by surprise and stuttered, I…I…I wasn’t aware that…that this was…was your territory.

You’re lucky I’m in a good mood. Otherwise, I would eat you as my appetizer," he said sharply.

That’s your good mood? Lucky me! What are you anyway? asked Wolfy while she was struggling not to show the fear in her voice.

I am Beau, and I am an American badger, not that this is any of your concern. He continued walking closer toward Wolfy’s corner. You’d better leave now if you want to see the next sunrise, he threatened Wolfy while looking up at her.

Wolfy looked around forlornly, raising her paws into the air and said, Why can’t we spend one night up here and share your space? I promise we won’t bother you, and we will leave tomorrow if you wish so.

Who is ‘we’ and where is ‘we’? demanded Beau. I only smell one rat.

My name is Wolfy, and my friend is Fate, and she’s out there hunting for her dinner, clarified Wolfy.

Beau snickered and was amused. A rat…hunting! He held his belly laughing. You crack me up, Wolfy. I’m starting to like you and your sense of humor.

Who said I’m traveling with one of my kin? she said arguably. She folded her paws in front of her belly and tapped with her foot slowly up and down and looked challengingly at Beau.

Beau looked up to Wolfy and asked, amused, Well, are you traveling with a dangerous mischievous kitty cat? He pretended to be scared, with eyes popping out, an open jaw, and a shivering body. Wolfy looked provocatively at him, tapping her foot faster, and was quite irritated at him, which made Beau laugh even harder.

Okay, calm down and tell me with whom are you traveling, Wolfy?

He was having way too much fun teasing Wolfy when Fate flew into the barn, screeching toward Beau.

    Back off, badger!

This truly spooked Beau for a moment, and his fur stood up on end, and he snarled at Fate, showing all his teeth.

Fate flew protectively in front of Wolfy to shield her from the furry monster.

Okay, she’s all yours, hawk, said the badger, grumbling as he trotted toward the big exit of the barn. Just when I started to like that rat!

Fate looked concerned to Wolfy to ensure she was
