    CHAPTER 1: ESCAPE

Many moons into the future in a Dominica much different from the one we know now; footsteps could be heard racing through the forest. Branches crackle, breaths, heavy. The rats and agouti scattered out of the way. The oddly orange sunlight shimmered through like a sharp contrast film. A mix of human and animal-like sounds could be heard.

The figures moving through the forest appeared like flickering shadows. Many majestic palm trees could be seen. Some towering several meters off the ground, others, just above ground, being violently parted and slapped around as the small group scurried through them.

"Jack, take your sister, let’s go!" said the man, to the smaller male adolescent figure immediately behind him.

"Yes, Daddy, I got her!" The teenager named Jack replied as he picked up a small child, hoisted her onto his shoulders and the entire group began running again.

A brief parting in the forest allowed for a quick glimpse of the group in its entirety, it was a family of six; as they passed a small cube-shaped structure, covered completely by vegetation. Abandoned. The forest grew thicker again. The family pressed on, their footsteps light.

    Heavier footsteps thundered behind them.

The man quickly pulled something from a dull coloured bag pack strung together with old,
