Been There, Dug That - Sharon Kennedy

This book is dedicated to all the dirt-fishers out there, finding history one piece at a time...

    ––––––––

    PREFACE

There are plenty of books out there on the topics of metal detecting, treasure seeking, fossicking, and prospecting which seem to share a similar goal; that being to inform and guide the beginner hobbyist (or anyone keen on learning new things) on how to better their techniques or research skills in order to increase the quantity or quality of their finds.

This is not one of those books.

Many fine authors have covered such topics in a number of ways, in a number of different countries, and in varying degrees of detail, for a range of specific detecting machines. My aim is not to compete with these truth-masters in their literary endeavours. This book is intended for general consumption, with truths that are universal, no matter where you live or what kind of detector you use. I live, in Queensland, Australia, however, the information shared here will work for almost anyone unless you live in a country/location where metal detecting is legislated against, or has strict conditions attached.

I began detecting in 1982 when I was fifteen, and I’m just shy of 60 now. I  detect for the fun of it, and though I do my research and check out other sources of information, mostly I take my chances and go where my travels take me. I hope the few stories here entertain and inspire you to get out there and get stuck into the hobby that has brought me much pleasure over four decades. I’ll begin with a story any newbie detectorist might find amusing.

So please, read on, and may the Dirt-fishing Deity of your choice shower you with enthusiasm, luck, and fill you with the thirst for the best kind of hunting I know.

    Shazz.
