Edward Steep

Edward Steep is a retired residential property Chartered Surveyor/Valuer who lives in the southern County of Hampshire in England, UK. He is married to childhood and school sweetheart who was in the same class as him. They have two grown-ups and have produced their first grandchild. Their daughter has been a casualty of Covid but lives locally with them which is comforting for all concerned. Author's wife has had a cancer scare in modern times whist the author recently took to writing but it seems they have both conquered these challenges and it is hoped with flying colours. They met whilst very young and married early which is a true love story in itself as they continue an obscenely long relationship.

Moving on…. A few notes on Earthquakes & Climate Change may help some Readers……

Google.com says:- Earthquakes are vibrations caused by rocks breaking under stress against an underground surface called a fault plane whereas a Tremor is an involuntary movement of the earth surface caused by stress in the underground rocks. They are both signs of seismic movement.

People in the UK are highly unlikely to suffer earthquake problems/damage. However, history tells us UK Housing experiences earthquakes up to about 4.5 magnitude (Richter scale is of 1 – 10 but could be higher in theory but also note that a mag 5 is ten times more powerful than a mag 4 etc…) roughly once every 2 years or so; this magnitude is too small to be felt and they are localised.

Building Regulations also require Homes to be built to withstand WIND SPEEDS from 85mph (37m/sec) in the South to over 120mph (54m/sec) in the far North. Such high winds only occur once in about every 50 years.

Probably the best type of Home Construction type to withstand such forces is REINFORCED CONCRETE FRAME. Obviously the greater the density of the construction type (like reinforced concrete) the better (plus the more
