About this ebook

That's Charlie's Mustang.
She looked at everything a second time, at Hauck's request. But while he was away in New Jersey, she felt she had to do something, to stop worrying. So Karen went through Charlie's things again and again - old bills, the pile of receipts Charlie left in the room, papers still on the desk. Even the websites he visited from his computer before he “died.”

    BLACK TIDE PART 4

    That's Charlie's Mustang.

Even the websites he visited from his computer before he died.

She told herself that this was a search that would yield no results. Just like last time. But this time, she found something. A file was hidden in Charlie's desk, under a pile of legal papers. Karen had never paid attention to this file before. Even before Charlie died because those were things she didn't understand.

Inside was a small card still in the envelope - addressed to Charles, which was what still came with the gift of a bouquet of flowers. Karen hesitated for a moment before opening the envelope, and saw the contents inside, contents she had never known before. What was written inside made her stunned.

Charles, I'm so sorry about the dog. Maybe next will be your children?

Sorry about the dog thing. Karen's hands trembled. Whoever wrote these lines, he is talking about the dog Sasha. And what can be understood here is that the children could be the next victims?

Their children...Karen felt someone squeezing her chest. What were they planning to do?

Then, like that hidden card, she found a postcard sent to her family before Charlie died. The photo shows four family members resting by a wooden fence in a field near their ski vacation home in Vermont. It was their happy time. She opened the card. Her eyes widened in fear. In the photo, Samantha and Alex's faces - both are cut off. Karen covered her face with her hands, feeling blood rush to her cheeks.

What the hell happened, Charlie? — She looked at the card intently. What the hell have you gotten yourself into? What are you doing with us, Charlie? And suddenly, Samantha's threat in the car at school came back to her, making her heart race. There is indeed something suspicious. She left the desk. She wanted to destroy something. She raised her hand to touch her face. Look around the room.

    Charlie's room.

Say it, Charlie, you're such a bastard, tell me! And then something suddenly caught her eye.

That pile of stuff. The pile was neatly packed and Charlie placed it on the bookshelf. Everything has to do that. Karen still calls that pile of stuff a definite fire hazard. Charlie's dream collection since he first got his toy, eighteen years ago.

    It's Mustang World.

She walked over to it - the towering pile of magazines. She picked up one, a thought forming in her mind. That's it! Something about Charlie that never changes. No matter what you change your name to. Or who you become. Or anywhere.

Your stupid car. Charlie's lover. He'd been reading about these damn things in his spare time, checking prices, chatting about the cars online. Her family always teased him about how it was considered a part of his life. Karen jokingly called her his girl, and she named her Camilla, as in Camilla and Charles (1). And Charles still joked that it was better than Camilla, and looked better too.

    Mustang World.

He kept advertising the car for sale but never sold it. He still drives his Mustang to races and regularly checks websites. She didn't understand what the postcards she found were about. They scared her. She didn't know exactly what he did.

But that's our way. - Karen told Hauck that while taking care of his wound. She reached into her bag, took out a magazine and threw it on the table. The World of Mustang book.

"That's how we find Charles, Ty. Charles' lover.

Police Center One is the headquarters of the New York Police Department and the Lower Manhattan Interagency Task Force responsible for ensuring the security of the city.

Hauck waited in the courtyard right in front of the building overlooking Frankfort Street leading directly to the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a hot May afternoon. Pedestrians and cyclists pass back and forth on the gray span of the bridge, and office workers in simple shirts and light office skirts are on their way to lunch. A few years ago, Hauck worked in this building. But it's been many years since he came down here anymore.

A bald man with a slight build and a navy police sweater was waving at a colleague to approach him, his badge pinned to his chest.

The most beautiful in New York. - The man standing in front of Hauck winked. He sat down next to Hauck and raised his fist to hit Hauck.

But it's so cold! - Hauck smiled back.
