    Sighting

At precisely 8.32 one Monday morning in early January, James Arthur Trent stuck his head out of the red front door of number 12, Victoria Gardens. He looked first one way up the street, then down it. He was about to withdraw his head again, when he saw something quite unusual. But it flashed by so quickly, that for a moment he was unsure that he had seen it at all.

Two feather dusters were flying up the road, and perched on top of each was a small figure, no bigger than ten inches tall. The figure in front was, to be exact, quite a bit bigger than the figure behind, who was clearly a child. But that was all Jamie was able to tell in the ten or so seconds they were visible before they disappeared up the road.

A distant ringing brought Jamie back to the present again. Turning his head, he saw what he had been looking out for. Mr Pobjoy, the milkman was driving up the road in his milk van.

Without another thought for the feather dusters and the people perched upon them, he turned and disappeared back into the house.

Moments later, Jamie left the house, accompanied by his mother, who was in a tearing hurry. They passed Mr Pobjoy, who was just delivering milk bottles to number 10 as they hurried down the road toward the school.

It was not until later that he remembered the strange little people and their feather dusters.

Jamie was what was known in the school as an ‘inside kid’ meaning that he preferred to stay inside at break time rather than go outside. Their teacher was happy to let him do this, so long as he read or wrote or drew but made no noise or mess. There were only two other children that preferred to stay inside, and they were the twin girls from Malaysia who had only just moved to England and knew very little English and so had no friends.

Jamie had tried to talk to them, but as he knew no Malay, and they knew few words in English, the attempt had seemed futile. They now simply smiled at each other from opposite sides of the room and left each other alone.

Jamie’s favourite book was ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and he had just got to the point
