    Foreword

The Book of Jude is a brief yet powerful epistle that packs a punch with its urgent message to contend for faith in the face of false teachings and immoral behaviour. While it may be one of the shorter books in the New Testament, it is by no means lacking in substance. In fact, the imagery and language used in the book are some of the most striking and memorable in all scripture.

    Introduction to this study

This study comprises an in-depth reflection of the Bible verses that make up the Book, based on the various verses of Scripture taken from the Book of Jude. Part 1 comprises the information about the Book, such as the writer, the audience, the time and place of writing and any other pertinent information that would set the stage for gleaning a greater understanding of the contents of the Book.

Part 2 is the verse-by-verse study that requires the reader to complete the questions and tasks. If this is done in a cell group environment, these answers should be discussed within the group.

Part 3 is the Knowledge Check, allowing you to test your knowledge of the Book of Jude.

Having a workbook to record the answers to the questions is advisable. Additional space may also be required to work through the extended research questions and other tasks throughout the study.

Access to commentary is unnecessary in answering the questions, although it could help. However, the Bible reading and, in many cases, the commentary associated with each verse will result in in-depth, thoughtful answers.

Answering the questions is not a race. Careful thought should go into writing down the answers, specifically the life application of these questions and their answers.

Engaging in a Bible Study suggests that the reader recognises their need to understand Scripture and the depth of wisdom that follows knowing and understanding God and His ways. This is a spiritual journey; it takes time to investigate the verses, their meaning as the writer intended, and their life application. Ensure prayer precedes each step of the way, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you and opening your heart and mind to the knowledge of God.

This study matters as it may apply to your life’s context. In other words, this study considers the Book’s Theology and other principles derived from the book within a framework that makes it easier to apply principles to our daily lives.

This study is not a commentary. Although specific information about each book is provided, this study does not use textual criticism.

    PART 1: Book Information

The Book of Jude in the Bible

The book of Jude holds a significant place in the New Testament, nestled between 3 John and Revelation.

Many scholars consider the Epistle of Jude an epistolary sermon. Jude could have delivered the content of this letter as a homily (sermon) if he had been physically present with his readers. However, since he could not address them directly, he conveyed his message as a letter. Other New Testament epistles that take the form of written homilies include James, Hebrews, and 1 John.

One of the hallmarks of Jude's sermonic style is his frequent use of triads—groups of three related elements. This rhetorical technique is evident throughout the epistle. In fact, one scholar identified at least 20 sets of triads within this brief letter. This use of triads enhances the epistle's structure and emphasis, making Jude's points more memorable and impactful for his readers.

Several scholars have observed that the book of Jude is fundamentally structured in a chiastic form. However, they may interpret the specific chiasms differently. A chiasm is a literary technique in which ideas are presented in a symmetrical, mirror-like pattern, often to emphasise central themes or points.

In Jude, this chiastic structure reinforces the message and provides a cohesive flow to his arguments. While there is some variation in how different scholars identify and outline these chiasms, the presence
