Introduction
God encourages us in his Word to give thanks in all things at all times. That’s not a mistake. When we choose to focus on things we are grateful for, our satisfaction in life increases. Comparisons cease. Unnecessary pursuits pause. And we begin to notice the little things. The things that matter. Life. Breath. Connection. Kindness. Beauty. This is where we find deep intimacy with God.
As you reflect on these devotional entries, scriptures, and prayers, refocus your perspective and meditate on things that produce life and joy, that bring peace and comfort. Spend the beginning and end of your day with God, experiencing his goodness and being refreshed in his presence. Be encouraged as you take time to ponder how wonderfully unique and abundantly blessed you are.
Evaluate each day in the light of God’s truth. Stand in awe of a God who gives beyond your wildest dreams. From the time you wake up, until the time you fall into bed at night, let your heart be filled with praise for his many blessings and wonders.
JANUARY 1
True Identity
Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
PSALM 139:16 NRSV
You were created with intention, your being knit together with love and honor. You are not an accident! You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and there is no other like you. God saw your life unfolding before you even took your first breath. He is your life-source.
Will you come to him with all your questions and doubts and lay them out before him? He can handle each and every one. As you lay them down, line your lips with praise. You are his! You are a child of the Living God, and he is your faithful Father. Let your heart come alive as you let your imagination run wild with the truth that you were created in Love’s image.
Creator, I am so thankful that you made me, not just to survive life but to thrive in it through a relationship with you. I won’t stop praising you for the gift of life!
You saw who you created me to be before I became me! Before I’d ever seen the light of day, the number of days you planned for me were already recorded in your book.
PSALM 139:16 TPT
Holy Father, as your child, I won’t stop coming to you for my daily bread. You know my needs before they even reach my consciousness. Thank you for your provision today. Thank you for your persistent presence that illuminates the beauty of fellowship with you.
You walk with me, no matter what path I find myself on or the circumstances I face. I trust you to guide me in spirit and in truth all the days of my life. You have already seen every possibility, so I will rely on your loving leadership to direct me in wisdom. Your ways are embedded in faithfulness. Help me to be rooted in my identity as a child of God. Your Word is better than any other!
How does your identity as a child of God affect how you live in the day-to-day?
JANUARY 2
My Sustainer
Preserve me, O God, for in you I put my trust.
PSALM 16:1 NKJV
There is no amount of hardship or depth of pain that, when we look to God, he will not help us with. He is healer, sustainer, and restorer. He will not let us be taken out by the intensity of our circumstances when we put our trust in him. It doesn’t matter how strong the storm that we are facing, his grace is more powerful. His mercy meets us in every season of the soul.
Let us put our hope in God, for he is our Savior. He will keep us safe in the refuge of his presence. He will restore our peace with his nearness, and our hearts will be continually filled with courage as we remember his power, as well as his goodness. Let us offer him our trust over and over again. He is faithful, he is worthy, and he is full of mighty power!
God, you are my strong shelter. I hide myself in your unchanging nature again today. You who are full of mercy, protect me from the schemes of the enemy. I trust in you!
Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
PSALM 16:1 NIV
My God, I have put all my hope in you. You are bigger and better than any grand plans I could come up with on my own. Your love is consistent and full of kindness. Your compassion runs deeper than any rebellion I have in my heart. Thank you for that! What wonderful news that I could never exhaust your mercy. I trust you to meet me with your love every time I turn toward you. You promise to never abandon me, and I rely on your nearness more than I can say.
There is no one else who is as persistently patient or as unfailingly caring as you. You are my safe place, and I can let down my guard in your presence. As I prepare myself for sleep, flood my being with your peace that passes all understanding. Give me rest as I take refuge in you. Keep me close and keep me secure. I am yours!
Do you trust God to take care of what you cannot control?
JANUARY 3
Abundance
God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 NIV
Are there times when you feel more able to trust God’s goodness and provision than others? Though you may go through seasons of plenty and those of lack, God is always full of abundance. His resources never wane; the storehouses of his mercy are overflowing at all times. Whatever it is that you have need of today, God has more than enough to meet your need.
Meditate on the Word today: so that in all things at all times, having all that you need.
Remember, you have access to all that you require today, no matter the realities that you are facing. Put your trust in him, for he is your generous provider!
Great God, thank you for your generosity toward your children. I give you all my worries, because I know that you are more than enough for all that I need. Meet me with your abundance today!
God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything—every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.
2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 TPT
God of abundance, you are the source of every good thing. I could never exhaust your mercy or reach the end of your love. It is more than I can comprehend! Thank you for the way that you met me today with your goodness. You are always full of kindness; I don’t want to ever forget it. Your grace empowers me to do all that I need to do.
I am so grateful that when I fill up on your mercy, there is more than enough to overflow from my life to others. Thank you for the clear indicators of your generosity in my life. May I reflect the abundance of your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
How have you seen God’s lavish grace show up in your life?

Never Abandoned
I had said in my alarm, I am cut off from your sight.
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help.
PSALM 31:22 ESV
When the dark of night comes, and the shadows start messing with our minds, we may find that our beliefs begin to be dictated by our fears. But even the blackest night is as clear as the brightest day to the Lord. He is unchanging, and his love has not wavered for even a moment. He sees what we cannot.
Will we trust him to lead us? Will we give him our fear and press into the peace of his presence? He has not left us. He will never abandon us. As we turn our attentions to him, we will find that his comfort descends like a blanket over us. He is ever so close. May we see with eyes of faith, trusting that his purposes and plans have not changed even when our circumstances have.
God of mercy, I cry out to you when I feel anxiety rise within me. I trust that you have not changed a bit! You are good, you are present, and you are for me. Reveal your nearness to me again today.
In panic I cried out, I am cut off from the LORD!
But you heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help.
PSALM 31:22 NLT
Lord, I’m so grateful that you answer my call for help every time I cry out to you. You have not left me alone in the face of my trials or troubles. What a beautiful friendship this is! Thank you for always being available whenever I need you. Though panic may move me for a moment, your peace keeps me within your grip of grace forever. There is nowhere I could wander that your love would not reach me.
I am undone by the kindness of your affection toward me. You are consistent and kind, an ever-present help in times of trouble. You will never abandon me. Continue to rewrite my understanding of your love without conditions, which is so much better than any other love I’ve ever known. You are so worthy of my trust. Thank you for being with me, for extending your tangible mercy into my life, and for guiding me with tenderness. Fill my mind with your unmatched truths as I continue to meditate on you and give me greater glimpses into your glory.
How has God answered your cries for help?

Resurrection Life
If while we were still enemies, God fully reconciled us to himself through the death of his Son, then something greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, and because we share in his resurrection life, how much more we will be rescued from sin’s dominion!
ROMANS 5:10 TPT
What does it mean to be fully reconciled to God? With nothing to get in the way of his wonderful love in our lives, he has done all that was required in order to restore the relationship we were always meant to have with him. This is more than friendship; it is freedom.
When Adam and Eve first walked with God in the garden, theirs was a perfect relationship. There was trust, honor, and love. There was unhindered fellowship. This is what we have through Christ. We share in his resurrection life and power, and we have been set free from the sin that entangled and kept us from walking in the liberty of love.
Jesus Christ, you are the way, the truth, and the life. I come to the Father through you, and I find my true belonging in fellowship with your Spirit. You have conquered the grave, and I am more than a conqueror in you!
Since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.
ROMANS 5:10 NLT
Son of God, you are the one that liberates my soul. I dance in the freedom that you have given me! There is nothing I could offer you that would make you love me more, and there is nothing I could do that would make you love me less. I am loved by the God over all. What a wonderful truth! I am set free by the mercy of your heart. I am free to live, to love, and to grow.
Thank you for the overcoming power of your life, Lord. I don’t rely on my own strength or resources to live an unhindered life; it is your resurrection power that has released me from the chains of sin and death. There is so much grace in you! I’m overwhelmed by the thought that your grace, mercy, and love never run dry. Thank you for restoration of life and purpose. Your ways are beautiful!
Are there any areas of your life where freedom is still needed?

Come Close
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
HEBREWS 4:16 ESV
No matter what is going on in our lives, we can always approach God with the confidence of dearly loved children. He always makes space for us; he will never turn us away. Though our focus is limited, God’s is not. He is not too busy to give us the consideration and care we need in every moment.
So then, whatever our worries, whatever our joys, we can come to him knowing that we have his attention. He is ready to pour out his mercy to strengthen us. He is ready with grace to empower us for every circumstance we face. May we never forget how fully loved and accepted we are. As his children, we need not linger at the periphery of his presence. Every time we draw near to him, he comes in even closer than we could imagine. Draw near today and be met by his overwhelming kindness.
Good Father, I approach your throne of grace with confidence today, knowing that you will receive me with delight. You are better than my expectations, and you always meet me with mercy. Come close as I draw near!
Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
HEBREWS 4:16 NLT
Gracious God, your kindness is like anointing oil seeping into my pores. It both covers and fills me. I am grateful for your mercy that greets me every time my awareness is turned toward you. I am surprised by the abundance of your grace over and over again, though I should be used to it by now! Your goodness is immeasurable. If I could store up every evidence of your kindness toward me, it would just be a drop in the bottomless bucket of your love.
Whenever I feel shame’s pull to hide from you, remind me that in you, all is made new. You are never surprised by me, and you won’t ever turn me away. I won’t stop coming to you. As our relationship builds, may the constancy of your affection keep me close to your heart. I don’t ever want to forget how wonderful you are!
Where do you need God’s grace in your life?

Shared Burden
If one part suffers, everypart suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
CORINTHIANS 12:26 NIV
Pain can be an isolating experience, but the burden of suffering was never meant to be carried alone. When we share our weighty problems with each other, it is easier to bear. Just as rejoicing is best done with others (who doesn’t love a celebration?), our sorrows are also invitations for leaning on others.
God’s love is not meant to just be experienced on an individual level. We get to know God’s tangible mercy in the context of relationships with others. We are part of a family: a community of believers. When we fall, we do it as a unit. When we rise, we do it together. Do not hide your pain from those who would witness it today. Let them help, lightening the weight of your problems as you walk hand-in-hand toward healing. There is triumph in the overwhelming grace that God offers us, and all the more when we experience it in the context of community!
Faithful One, thank you for the reminder of the power of solidarity today. Help me to be vulnerable with trusted friends instead of trying to bear my pain alone.
Whatever happens to one member happens to all. If one suffers, everyone suffers. If one is honored, everyone rejoices.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:26 TPT
Lord, my constant companion, I have been leaning on your love to keep me afloat. I realize that I was not meant to bear the burden of my pain and suffering alone. Thank you for community. I ask that you continue to build it around me, and that I would know the safety of relationships with those who love you.
I have known the relief of comfort from loved ones, and I recognize the power of being able to offer the same to others. Keep me close in your kindness, that I may be moved with compassion whenever I recognize another’s pain. Your love is made pure in my life when I offer it to others. There is always movement in it; it is not stagnant. May my heart stay soft and open in mercy. I don’t want to miss out on what you’re doing in your people because I am caught up in my own life. I lean on you, and I will lean on your people, as well as I help carry their loads.
When was the last time you asked a trusted person for help?

Test It Out
Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 JOHN 4:1 NKJV
We walk with wisdom as our guide. We are not helpless to the ways of the world or blown about by the winds of its ever-shifting expectations. We are secure on the foundation of God’s Word. He has given us keys to his kingdom, and we are able to discern what aligns with him and what does not.
The fruit of the Spirit is a clear indicator of one who walks with the Lord. We should not blindly believe what one preaches as truth if their life does not align in God’s love. God’s standards are better than our own—full of mercy and kindness but also justice and truth. He is the only wise judge. He does not ask us to condemn others; rather, he instructs us to be wise about what we believe is from him. There is grace in the process, as with all things. May we press into the knowledge of the Lord more and more as we look for his likeness in others.
Lord, I recognize that I don’t always test out the things I believe. Give me wisdom, that I may walk in the light of your truth and the power of your love in all things.
Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 JOHN 4:1 NIV
God, thank you for the reminder that I not only know your character, as displayed in your Word, but that I also can discern the spirits behind popular beliefs. Help me to be wise, so that I don’t grab at the things that appease me in my humanity. Help me to be discerning, so that I do not judge others because I don’t understand their life experiences. Their lives are marked by your love and mercy, too.
As I fellowship with you, teach me what it means to be like you in love. Give me your unparalleled perspective that takes into account what I don’t consider. You are infinitely better than I’ll ever be, and your motives are pure. I bind my heart to yours, and I will listen to your tender correction. As you break down the lies of misleading viewpoints that I have been holding onto, fill my mind with your peace and truth. Your ways lead to wholeness, life, and freedom. I will follow you!
How do you test the beliefs that you hold?
JANUARY 9
Capable
Using the Scriptures, the person who serves God will be capable, having all that is needed to do every good work.
2 TIMOTHY 3:17 NCV
There is an abundance of wisdom for all who seek it. In God’s Word, we are given the keys to his kingdom, and we are taught to recognize his unmistakable nature. No matter the problems we face, there are solutions to be found in God’s living Word. He has not finished communicating with us; he is still speaking today. Whatever it is that we need, we will find encouragement in the Scriptures.
As we ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the eyes of our hearts, we will understand with revelation-light what God is expressing to us now. His living and active Word is applicable to our lives in this moment in time. His unchanging character is timeless. We have all we need in our fellowship with God, and his Word is a beautiful reflection of his interaction with us.
Living Word, speak to me today. I know that you are alive and well, and that you are still moving in the same ways that you were in the Scriptures. Meet me with your love and truth!
You will be God’s servant, fully mature and perfectly prepared to fulfill any assignment God gives you.
2 TIMOTHY 3:17 TPT
Loving Lord, I have all I need in you. Your Word shows me all that awaits me in a relationship with you. What a wonderful gift! You are so very patient in love, and you are consistent in mercy. I would not know what you were like if it weren’t for the Scriptures. Thank you for access to your nature through Spirit and truth.
May my life continually align with your love as I discover more of who you are. May I grow in wisdom and understanding as I meditate on your Word. May I be perfectly prepared to do all that you call me to do as I learn to be more like you. I lack no good thing because I have access to you! You are wonderful, and your Word is like sweet honey to my soul. It satisfies what man’s empty words cannot. Keep teaching me as I look to you.
Can you recall a time when God’s Word pierced your heart with its relevance?
JANUARY 10
Come Again
My life’s strength melts away with grief and sadness; come strengthen me and encourage me with your words.
PSALM 119:28 TPT
In the depths of grief, when we cannot see past our sorrow, there is a friend who sticks closer than a sibling. The Spirit, our comforter, strengthens us with grace and encourages us with the honey of God’s Word. He speaks what is true, filled with love and tenderness toward us. He lifts us up with the kindness of his truth; he never beats us down with shame. As our strength wanes, he comes and breathes his life into us.
There is no better comfort than the comfort that he gives. He knows just what to say when we are at a loss for words. He knows exactly what to do when we don’t know what we need. He is everything we long for; in fact, he is the perfection of every longing. How could we not feel love brought to life in the communion of Spirit to spirit? The depth of his love overwhelms the depth of our loss—every single time. His presence is a balm that both soothes and heals us.
Comforter, come to me again with the tangible relief of your presence. Meet me with the peace and love that always accompanies you.
I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word.
PSALM 119:28 NLT
Holy Spirit, when my eyes are heavy with sorrow, wrap me into the embrace of your close comfort. I know that you are near. I have to believe that you have not changed even if everything around me feels like it has. Speak your words of life to my exhausted heart. Encourage me with your love that is close to the brokenhearted. Mend my wounded heart with the oil of your presence.
When I have no strength to stand on my own, let alone walk anywhere, will you draw near and carry me through? Though I am depleted, you are still abundant in love and mercy. I depend on you, God; there is no one else who can offer what you do. You are the one I rely on through every season of the soul; in the highs and the lows of this life, you are my daily bread. Let me catch a glimpse of your kindness for me. Let me know your nearness, Lord!
How have you known God’s comfort in your life?
JANUARY 11
Rooted in Goodness
I certainly believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.
PSALM 27:13 NASB
When nothing good can be seen, and all the light of life turns to darkness in the deep valley of sorrow and suffering, there is still relief in the nearness of the Lord. He has not left us to be consumed by grief, and he won’t let it be the end of our hope. Dark nights do not last forever. Winter seasons eventually give way to the dawn of new life. God will never stop restoring and redeeming that which is broken and seems lost. His power is marked by resurrection life.
We can be sure, as long as we live, that we will see the goodness of the Lord again. Suffering may last for a time, but joy will come in the morning. There is no lasting reason to despair when our lives are marked by the deliverance of our saving God. He won’t stop working his redemption miracles.
Redeemer, I depend on your goodness in my life. I know that no matter what I am going through, I have not reached the end of your love. Show me your miracle-working power again!
I totally trust you to rescue me one more time, so that I can see once again how good you are while I’m still alive!
PSALM 27:13 TPT
Savior, I you are the one that I rely upon in life. Only you can rescue me from the pit of despair that threatens to swallow me up. Lift me into your comforting arms of love again tonight. Wrap me in the warmth of your affection. I long to know your present goodness with me. Give me eyes to see where you are, ears to hear what you are saying, and a heart that understands how marvelous your love is.
I want to taste your overwhelming kindness in a clear and tangible way. Will you meet me with the tenderness of your Spirit and soothe my wearied heart? I trust you, Lord, to rescue me from what I cannot outrun. I know that you will keep me safe. I know you will! I’m putting all my hope in you again, for you haven’t failed me yet.
When was the last time you were overwhelmed by the goodness of God?

Always Good
The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.
LAMENTATIONS 3:25 NIV
It is a beautiful thing to spend our lives loving a God whose kindness is endless. When we look to him in all things, we will not be disappointed in his loyal and loving nature. He is good to those who put their trust in him. To those who seek him, God shows his compassion.
Look for him in the big and the little things. His ways are marked with the promotion of peace, mercy that covers our missteps, and miracles of restoration. His tangible goodness works out in our lives in a myriad of ways. Can you recognize the thread of his loving nature woven into the fabric of your life? Step back for a moment and look through a broader lens. Look over your history with him and see with fresh eyes how his faithfulness has met you.
Lord, I trust that you are not finished working things together for my good. Give me eyes to see where you have been weaving your mercy into my life and where you are doing it now.
The LORD is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.
LAMENTATIONS 3:25 NLT
Good God, thank you for being a reliable help in times of trouble and a stable presence when all is going well. You are always there with a listening ear, and your words of life revive my weary soul. You send help just when I need it, and you never turn away. Whenever I look for you, I find you. I’m so grateful for your nearness, your comfort and your steadiness. Your love is like a firm foundation beneath my feet; I can stand upon you and not be moved. It doesn’t matter what threats come; your mercy keeps me secure.
Let me see your goodness in my life in both little and big ways. Let me look through the lens of your perfect perspective so that I don’t miss a thing! You have been so faithful to me; I know that I can count on you still. As I search for you throughout my days, let your revelation-light shine on the eyes of my heart, that I may understand your ways and follow them until the end.
Do you believe that God is always good?
JANUARY 13
New Life Coming
To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory.
ISAIAH 61:3 NLT
This morning, as with every new day, is an opportunity to experience the fresh mercy of God meeting us right where we are. He is the God of new life, who trades our worn-out ways that bring us down for his overwhelming love that revives us. What he gives, no one can take away. What is weighing you down today? What heavy load have you been carrying? Give it to God today and take up his light load; it is full of joy, fresh perspective, kindness, and acceptance.
Will you dare trade your ashes for the crown of beauty he offers? Will you give him your disappointment and receive his festive praise in its place? If it sounds too good to be true, know that it is the gospel of his peace. He takes everything we give him, no matter how awful it seems, and offers us gifts from the riches of his glory.
Lord, I give you everything that weighs me down so that I can receive what you are offering. You are so glorious in kindness! Thank you for the freedom you give in abundance.
To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.
ISAIAH 61:3 NKJV
Righteous One, you are the one who comforts me in my mourning. You take the ashes of disappointed hopes in my life and offer me beauty in their place. You drench me in the oil of your joy, which seeps into the depths of my grief. You take the heaviness of sorrow and cover me in the garment of your praise. You have planted me in the garden of your kingdom, and the fruit borne of my life is a reflection of your tender care.
You are such an amazing counselor and a faithful friend. There is no one else who can coax life from destruction and defeat the way that you do. What you breathe on comes alive. You are the light of life itself. Where would I be without you? I have placed all my hope in you, and I won’t take it back. Keep doing your restorative work in my life.
What have you been holding onto that you can offer God today?
JANUARY 14
Everything I Need
The LORD is my portion,
says my soul, therefore I will hope in him.
LAMENTATIONS 3:24 ESV
It is a good practice to measure the resources we have available to us. When they are limited, a budget helps us live within our means, making sure that we can put the
