    Chapter 1

    Susan Meets Miranda

I am a pirate. I hide my soul from the evil chickens in a cage made of flesh and bones. I hide it so much that I sometimes forget I have a soul, but then the Lord reminds me to feed it and to nourish. It was what Miranda thought while waiting for the interview. Then she thought, Speaking of nourishment for the soul, Maddison sent me an online preacher to listen to.

She grabbed her laptop and began listening to the preacher; he read Psalm 51:5 (KJV): Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Then he said, This proves that we are born sinners because like produces like a cat can only give birth to a cat because like produces like so a sinner can only give birth to a sinner because like produces like.

Miranda grabbed a pen and paper to write Maddison a note so that so she would not forget her thought because when she was doing the interview, she would be hyper focused and would forget what she wanted to tell Maddison. She began to write, The preacher is using the worst example in the world to prove his point. All mothers contradict his point because no mother is a virgin while they are pregnant, but the child is a virgin when it comes from the womb and stays a virgin for a long time. A mother passing something complicated like sin along to her child but not being able to pass something simple like her nonvirginity status to her child is like saying that a person can do complex math like algebra but not being able to do simple math like add and subtract. Then Miranda looked at her watch and said, Ten more minutes, and it will be time for the interview. She said in her best fake Russian accent, Must go to bathroom and make cage for soul strong like bull and hide soul deep in cage. Young barnyard fowls may have already developed taste for evil.

The old yellow school bus headed down the road. It had Greene County School District Bus Number 11 on the side. It was carrying Ted, Bobby, Terry, Joe, Susan, Brittany, and Lisa on the field trip. Susan was filled with pride because she was chosen by her school to be a part of the PAMS program (which stood for Promising Advanced Mature Students), which was a fancy way of saying honor roll students that do not cause any problems.

Susan Ant was a starstruck teenager—fresh-faced and wide-eyed who could not believe her luck. She was chosen by her school to go three towns over to Republic, Missouri, and meet her idol: Channel 23 news anchor, Miranda Dodson. This was her reward for her hard work. Her fellow students chose to meet Tim Bachelor, a local graphic artist. They were going to tag along with her and vice versa.

Brittany was sitting in front of Susan and turned and asked Susan, Are you as nervous about meeting Miranda as I am about meeting Tim?

Susan replied, I'm terrified because I'm about to meet one of the most beautiful women in all of America. Susan asked, Do you think she is beautiful?

    Brittany said, Yes.

Then Lisa, who was sitting across from Susan to her right, chimed in and said, That, she was borderline exquisite.

Terry, who was sitting behind Susan, spoke up and said, I could not believe that you three girls are talking about a pretty girl when you are about to meet Tim Bachelor and learn secrets for making video games.

Lisa replied, "None of us three used the term pretty. They said beautiful, and I said almost exquisite, and there is a big difference."

Terry asked sarcastically, Would you explain the difference?

Lisa replied, "Glad to. Here's the difference. Pretty is like owning a Mustang with a V6 and having no options, and beautiful is like owning a Mustang with a V8 and most of the options, and exquisite is like a perfect Mustang with a V8 and all the options."

After a minute of silence, Lisa reached across the aisle and got Susan's attention and asked, Do you know what I think of when I see Miranda on the news?

    She said, Tell me.

Lisa said, I always thinks of Moses on the mountain looking over into the promised land. He had angered the Lord and could not go over, and Miranda Dodson was the same way. She angered the Lord and could not get over into the land of exquisiteness.

Susan wanted to be just like Miranda, and not only like her, but even more famous. Instead of being locally famous, she wanted to be internationally famous. They pulled into the parking lot. The building was large, with gray stucco siding. It had large red letters that said WKRY23. It had two dark-tinted glass doors. The first person they met was Debbie Marsing, who was the managing editor. She took Susan to a large conference room and took the other students to the other conference room where they met Miranda first along with the staff, and then they were giving the Wi-Fi password. The other students meeting with Miranda was brief, about ten minutes. Susan sat nervously waiting for the door to open and Mrs. Dodson to walk in. She was going to write an article for her school newspaper about Miranda and why she was her idol. Just then, the door opened, and Mrs. Dodson stepped in and shook hands with Susan.

Miranda Dodson was beautiful to look at. She was a brunette with long brown hair pulled up on top of her head in a perfect bun. She was kind of tall, maybe around five feet, ten inches, very slender, about 130 pounds. She had flawless skin that was very fair, almost alabaster. If it would not cause her pain, you could grind it up and make plaster out of it. The only flaw in her shin was self-inflicted, because when she was younger, she got her ears pierced eight times, four in each ear. She had green eyes that sparkled. They looked like two four-leaf clovers had been placed into her skull. Miranda's teeth were perfect. They were as white as milk and all in a line, like perfect little soldiers. She was wearing a pink buttoned-up blouse with a two-inch black stripe that started at the shoulder and ran down the sleeves, all the way down to her wrists. She was also wearing a black skirt that stopped just at the bottom of her knees and a pair of wedge shoes.

They sat down across from each other; Susan nervously dropped her pen and pad about four times. One of the times that Susan dropped her notepad and picked it up, she laid it on the table where Miranda could see it. The pad had rumor number 1 written on it. Beside it were the words Miranda has a friend named Chris, who was very athletic, then it had a question beside it, Wondering if he was cute? The second rumor was that Miranda was going to get a divorce and move to Abu Dhabi. When Miranda read the rumors, she gave a little snicker and began to rub her eyes. Susan noticed that Miranda was smiling, and rubbing her eyes, she said, I am sorry that I'm so unorganized.

Miranda said, Don't need to apologize. In fact, I'm wanting to apologize to you.

Susan looked surprised and asked, What for?

Miranda replied, Well, I've seen your two rumors about me and thought the second one was funny. I am sorry I peeked at your notes. Please forgive me.
