    ALPHA

The darkness of the desert is so apparent as I make my way through its vile domain. In my thoughts, I can see the past clouding my mind; and as it does, I am filled with despair and anger. I hate what has happened, but there is no way around it we were fools. We were hustled, we were tricked, and we were used. I can see the devastation, the loss, the deplorability, and the hopelessness that accompanies it. We were young, we were being ostracized, and we were losing a war that we could not win. Trapped under the gaze of a world that had no love for us, no worth for us, and tyrants who only controlled us. The years of being pushed under the boot of our persecutors had made us angry, distraught, and searching for answers. We were furious over what had been done to our people and the history that had been stolen from us. I was but a young man when this all occurred while I grew up under this totalitarian regime. We had the voices to unite, but we had no one to lead us against this opposition. It was a state of decay that showed itself to be a Trojan horse for us. We needed one that could unite us, push us, and teach us what we needed to know. We needed a person who could be our general and drive us into battle. We needed a leader.

But as hard as we tried to find this one, we could not. We searched endlessly; however, there was not a single person who could fill that void. Many tried, all failed, and our desperation was falling away to nothing that could bring us out. Yet just as things appeared to be too grim to overcome and our hopelessness set in, one appeared. Rising from the dirt of the earth, he was wise, he was educated, and he knew how to wage a war. We were in shock when we finally saw what our minds could not have imagined. His following started small; nevertheless, it only grew. We listened, we heard it, and we knew what this man truly was saying was what we all wanted to hear. And that day we proclaimed him master.

    A: II

The war for our country started immediately, and we began preparations to fight against this opposition.

The pain of all those years drove us. Life of poverty, crime, and futility were the feelings that drove us. I was a soldier in our army; furthermore, this man gave me so much hope. He was a tactician, a warrior of pure intelligence, and one that had no equal in his preparations. The training was hard, but we knew we had to be prepared with our hearts ready to fight. We listened to everything he said and as we did the feelings only grew. Finally we were ready. Our first battle was a massive success as we hit a convoy passing through the region. We gained their weapons and artillery and our courage only grew. With our first victory in our grasp, we got their attention. They retaliated, and our second battle was one of ferociousness that was not constrained. It couldn't be overstated that this fight was harder to overcome. They were armed they were powerful, and they were ready to kill. With our scars on our uniforms, we fought on, but it was a battle we couldn't win. Our tyrants could not be beaten easily, and we fled into the mountains as we lost our first major confrontation. Even though we had lost, we were inspired by the master's words. He said our numbers were fewer, so we had to attack in a more striking manner. It meant using everything to our advantage, and with that, we were going to need an ally to help back us in the war. We trained, and we followed through on what he said; and when we were ready, we struck again. This time, we formed a new alliance.

    A: III

The second battle was one that taught us that our enemy had more power than we originally thought. So for our third encounter, we decided to bring it all out to fight them. Using our new tactics, we struck back using both land and sea. They had the ships, and we had the forces, so the fight to free our world began. We brought it in every way against our opponents and the battle was waged in all manner of terrain. We warred in the streets, in the jungle, the mountains, and within the desert while our ally fought them in the air, on the sea, and on the land. It lasted days as we drove them back from our shores, but the battle was too much for our foes. We pushed on with all heart and vigor, fighting to the last man standing. Never giving up, never backing down from our opponent. We would be free or die trying. The war was long and had been paved in blood, bullets, and swords; but on that day that we had longed to see, we defeated our enemy. As the news spread, the country rejoiced. It was over; the nightmare we had been in for years was done. Our land was ours again, but our victory was short-lived.

    A: IV

On that day, a treaty was signed, and the agreement was one we had been waiting to see in fruition. However, as the curtain rose of our success, we were in for a shock. The terms of the deal were not set in the manner that we expected. It was learned that our newfound ally would receive the land, not the people who had been under this control. When we learned of this, we demanded that our country be given to us, but our once-trusting friend refused. In anger, we declared war on them, and we looked to our leader to guide us once again. But he didn't; he sided with our betrayers and like a wolf in sheep's clothing walked away from us. Watching this all unfold made us see him as the charlatan he was, and we saw what we were in reality. Nothing but numbers that had been marching to our demise for our master. Disposable digits who had fought this war only to see it be taken from us. The wrath exploded as the region learned what had taken place, and we took it to the streets. Riots broke out and we attacked everything in sight. Churches and businesses were torched to the ground. Lives were lost, families were strained, and the pain of all that fighting had made itself visible once again. We had beaten those tyrants that we had been under for so long. Our confidence was at an all-time high, and we thought we could take this new adversary, but the battles weren't even close. They were a slaughter as we saw how heavily armed they were. The anguish of defeat was too common as we would flee trying to survive. These weren't confrontations; they were massacres, and we were ill-equipped to deal with our foes. They crushed us, and as we fled they sent their soldiers in to hunt us. We had no choice but to disband, and just like that, it was about trying to live as they came after our army. Now there is nothing left, and we are but scattered ronin in a sea of barbarians.

    A: V

I walk on through that darkened wasteland and angrily feel the sand starting to pick up. In my soul, I am stained and painted in pain and loss. The storm starts to advance, and I know I have to find shelter. My boots are heavy, but I continue on my journey toward a secluded settlement. As I come closer, I can see the settlers scattering like mice rushing for their safe abodes. The storm is getting fiercer, yet the guards watch cautiously as I approach the gates. Up above in the watchtowers, snipers are ready to fire. The soldiers start to frisk me down, checking me over. They make sure I have nothing else leaving my sword before they open the gates.

    CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK.

The wood drags across the sand, and I pass through. A mother and her child go rushing into a protected dwelling. They don't want anything to do with me and I know there is only one place I can go. Venturing into the bottom of the earth the mouth welcomes me with that dirt and filth. More rush away as I head deeper within the catacombs. The storm billows on, and I can hear the howling winds dissipate as I encounter this earthly relic. As I come closer I can see the ruins of an old cathedral sprawled out on the landscape. I approach the doors; they creak of old oak and dissonance as I enter. Immediately I see the confines of a house that was once one of worship. The patrons are glued to the television and unable to look away. Gazing at the program, I can see that it is a news broadcast that is being shown to everyone in the country. Ahead I can see the counter. A traveler is checked in, and then I see her. Beautiful, dark ebony skin, and one that is so striking to witness. My feet approach her, and she turns almost instinctively.

    HER: You look like shit.

Yeah just got out of the storm.

    HER: What do you need?

Just a room for the night.

She nods but the shrewd businesswoman she is comes out.

    HER: Fifty bucks.

I reach into my cloak and draw out the bills.

    Here.

She again acknowledges and hands a key to me.

HER: Room 9 up the stairs. Breakfast is at 8:00 a.m. Checkout is at noon got it?

    Yeah, I got it, thanks.

HER: No problem. See you in the morning.

My body gestures, and then I head away up those stairs. They're cramped, old, creaking as I walk up to the destination. Upon reaching the third floor, I start to head down that corridor. A patron passes, and there at the end, I see my room. I place the key into the slot, and the door opens. Entering the crypt, I see its contents, and it isn't much. A table, a TV, and not much else. I sigh for a moment and place my sword on the bed, turn on the set, and open the fridge. My hands grasp a beer, and I twist the cap off; however, on the screen, an inauguration is taking place. I lie down on the mattress, and there ahead, I can see him. The man we once believed
