    A Nightly Dose of Wonder

The author, a dual-trained MD, PhD neurosurgeon and neuroscientist, has spent his life studying the brain and its intricate connections. Dreaming is a central theme in his research, as it has always been a source of mystery and inspiration for various fields such as medicine, psychology, religion, philosophy, and art. Dreams are both real and surreal, revealing our nature, interests, and deepest concerns.

Dreams are a product of normal brain electrophysiology and an extraordinary transformation occurring during sleep, following the circadian rhythms that govern all life. They are a different form of thinking that can be transformative, leading to great leaps in art, design, and fashion. Today, dreams can mean ambition, ideal, fantasy, and vivid narratives generated during sleep. Neuroscience shows that the boundaries between sleep and waking are not so clean after all, and dreams can help solve problems, learn musical instruments, practice sports, and make predictions about the future.

Dreams are an elusive form of cognition, as they are experienced alone and subjective, making much about them beyond experimental testing or scientific proof. This book aims to capture the current state and breadth of knowledge about dreams and dreaming while noting uncertainties in research and disagreements among researchers. It includes theories developed based on the latest research and the author's own knowledge of the brain.

The magic of dreaming is that when we dream, we transcend our physical selves, allowing us to travel back in time or forward into the future. Dreams are our nightly dose of wonder, and their significance cannot be overstated.
