    CRIMSON TREE, CRIMSON SNOW

    A six-year-old Celestian girl sat at the window, propping her chin on her hands. Her weary, deep blue eyes followed the bulky snowflakes. The snowflakes were few and far between and they descended at an easy pace, the snowstorm having died out long before the sunrise.

    Hefri! called an adult female voice.

    Hefri Ithrunndottir eyes fluttered open at the sound calling her.

    Get ready. The voice continued, It would be nice if you came back before the lunch.

    Hefri’s black ponytail spread for a moment like a raven’s tail as she  jumping down from the windowsill. A tiny heater, resembling a grey, scuffed tin with a yellow light, warmed up the kitchen.  A table and six chairs stood next to the heater, all covered in a thin layer of dust after being abandoned after her father’s accident. The Celestian girl put on her boots and stood on her tiptoes, reaching for her coat, gloves and a hat with earflaps. As she grabbed her belongings, her mother peeked into the room.

    I know we have to prepare for the winter, the mother said, but don’t risk too much. Don’t worry if you don’t catch any big wild beast. She smiled, but her tired eyes didn’t express any drollness.

    Don't worry. I’ll catch two of them. Hefri smiled. She reached towards a rifle and hung it over her shoulder. The weapon was almost as tall as her and looked like it was recently unearthed from an excavation, but it
