Chapter 1: Return to Baneberry Hall
Maggie Holt gripped the steering wheel tightly as she navigated the winding road leading to Baneberry Hall. The imposing silhouette of the Victorian estate loomed ahead, its turrets and gables piercing the evening sky. It had been twenty-five years since she and her parents had fled this place, and now she was returning to a house she barely remembered, but one that had haunted her family ever since.
The car rumbled over the gravel driveway, and Maggie parked in front of the grand entrance. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She reminded herself that she was here to prepare the house for sale, nothing more. Ghosts didn't exist, and whatever her father had written in his memoir, *House of Horrors*, was just fiction—embellished to sell books. She stepped out of the car, the cool evening air carrying the scent of damp earth and old wood.
Maggie retrieved her bags from the trunk and approached the heavy wooden doors. The key her father had left her felt cold and foreign in her hand as she inserted it into the lock. The door creaked open, revealing a dark, cavernous foyer. Dust motes danced in the last rays of sunlight that filtered through the stained glass windows. She flicked the light switch, but nothing happened. With a sigh, she pulled out her flashlight and shone it around the room, the beam illuminating the faded grandeur of the space.
She stepped inside, the floorboards groaning under her weight. The air was thick with the musty smell of disuse. The foyer led to a grand staircase, its banister carved with intricate details now cloaked in dust. She could almost hear the echoes of her childhood footsteps racing up and down those stairs, a memory buried deep within her mind.
Maggie set her bags down and wandered through the main floor. The dining room was still furnished, the long table covered with a sheet that resembled a ghostly shroud. The kitchen, with its old-fashioned appliances, seemed frozen in time. She paused at the entrance to the living room, where an enormous fireplace dominated one wall. Above it hung a portrait of the house itself, painted in dark, foreboding tones.
Her father's study was the last room she explored. The shelves were lined with books, many of them old and leather-bound. On the desk lay a thick, worn copy of *House of Horrors*. Maggie hesitated before picking it up. She had never read it, but now, standing in the very place where it had all supposedly happened, curiosity got the better of her. She opened the book to the first page and began to read.
