    PART 1

    THE COURTSHIP

    What’s in a Name?

The author, who had been online-dating for years, initially used sites like Nerve.com and OkCupid to connect with potential partners. They took a numbers approach to dating, trying out various connections but not finding anything that met their needs. They wanted an equal partner who matched their energy and curiosity.

Ethan Schuman, a thirty-five-year-old with a PhD and a job described as stealing from the rich, was a potential match. He was approachable, attractive, and had a PhD in applied math. Ethan was born in New York and had a family of Russian Jewish immigrants. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in NYC, majored in physics at Columbia, and completed a PhD in applied math at MIT. He worked for Morgan Stanley and the U.S. government, living and working between DC, Ireland, and NYC.

Ethan's cleverness, openness, and eagerness to keep the conversation going caught the author's attention. They found him on OkCupid after Christmas 2010, and the platform encouraged abundant exchange of words with users. The platform allowed users to write novel-length self-descriptions and took advantage of word limits for each question prompt. Some profiles read more like philosophy essays than modern-day dating profiles, but this was the trend of that era.

Old-school OkCupid was a virtual version of the Saturday night bar experience, with clever openers, witty banter, and long-game verbal rapport-building.

After an hour of messaging on OkCupid, Ethan and I moved to Gmail and Google Chat. Ethan and I enjoyed wordplay and verbal sparring, and we discussed our mutual love for vowel names. Ethan mentioned his ex-girlfriend's name, Anna, which he thought was as hot as he'd want an Anna to be. He reassured her that she was ahead of the game and that her name already warms his heart.

The author became a master Googler of guys they met online, finding information on everything from professional résumés to dating history and political persuasion in under sixty seconds. However, Ethan took a different approach, not believing in googling and focusing on in-person connection. He took his privacy seriously and warned that the in-person connection would be disappointing.

Ethan's privacy was a concern, as he didn't believe in putting his life on the internet and couldn't have it for some of his work. He also didn't believe in networking and becoming public figures and icons, which he felt was not his style.

The author shares her story of her parents' cross-cultural love affair, which was a mix of romance novels and political thrillers. They met in Texas, where great Iranian/Irish-American romances start. The author's parents were both hopeless romantics, but their relationship was strained due to the Iranian Revolution. The author's mother moved to Iran to make a life with her father, who was a mysterious foreign phantom throughout her life.

The author's parents celebrated when the author's mother became pregnant and planned to return to the United States to settle as a family. However, unrest erupted around them in Tehran, and the author's father was not present. The author's dating intrigue was dreaded by some, who preferred someone with a more traditional family.

The author, raised Catholic and not subscribe to any particular religion, was unsure if her half-Persian roots would be an issue. Ethan, who had a good Iranian friend, agreed that she should date women who have a balanced mix of heart and spunk. However, Ethan remained fixated on her half-Persian roots, claiming that Iran is the most dangerous and
