The Jante Law
At the root of Jesper's problems is the Jante Law
This is a stupid short-sighted and navel gazing Danish attitude towards anyone who they consider is trying to be better than them.
Sounds difficult and narrow minded but a lot of Danes, in order to protect themselves have a tendency to demean others so as to feel better about themselves. It is a herd mentality and a way of not getting into the limelight. Anyone who tries is pounced on to make sure he or she does not outshine the others or get above their stations.
Jesper is being shunned and maybe bullied at his new school. He has a problem coping with this and also, being a proud individual he will not confide in his parents and definitely not in his teachers.
You're not to think you are anything special.
You're not to think you are as good as we are.
You're not to think you are smarter than we are.
You're not to convince yourself that you are better than we are.
You're not to think you know more than we do.
You're not to think you are more important than we are.
You're not to think you are good at anything.
You're not to laugh at us.
You're not to think anyone cares about you.
You're not to think you can teach us anything.
Chapter 1: The booklet arrives
M r and Mrs Knasfis , thank you for coming.
The school principal says, looking over her half glasses at the couple opposite. They are the parents of Jesper who has problems adjusting at this, his new school.
Jesper's father, Tomas is a director in an IT company. He sports a big Indian cricketer type beard.
Jesper's mother, Marissa is a social worker dealing with helping immigrants and socially disadvantaged families cope with life. She looks kind and caring and is dressed in loose fitting black clothes.
As I hope you are aware, Jesper is shunned by the other pupils at this school. That is difficult to do anything about, as there is no physical violence. How can you reprimand a pupil for not talking to or acknowledging another pupil? We have to build back his self-esteem so he can hold his own.
While this meeting is going on, Jesper is slowly making his way home after school. He is on his own as usual, as everyone else has left in groups of two or more. He walks slowly, dragging his feet and his school bag. Ever since he started at this new school, for some inexplicable reason nobody wants anything to do with him. Even on the football field when he is picked to play, nobody bothers to pass the ball. In the school yard between lessons he sits or stands on his own while the other pupils gather in happy crowds or huddle in small groups conspiring to commit whatever deed is on their mind. In the classroom, he is also ignored and not included in the boisterous banter that normally happens before the teacher enters the room.
He just does not understand what he might be doing differently here as opposed to his old school where he had a lot of friends, both boys and girls. Here he is being ignored, shunned even and that hurts.
His self-esteem is at a very low ebb and this affects his school work, making it difficult to concentrate. Consequently his grades are dropping and he now dreads going to school at all.
This has been going on for weeks until finally his parents began noticing his reluctance in the mornings when it was time to leave for school.
Now they are in a meeting with the School Principal and Jesper fear for the outcome and what he will be facing when they get home.
Entering his house,
