The GPS screen flickered , the signal wavering in and out. April squinted at the map, trying to make sense of the winding roads and unclear directions. I think we missed the exit back there, she said, her voice tinged with frustration.

Eddie glanced over, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Should we turn around?

April shook her head, glancing at the darkened surroundings outside. Let’s keep going. We’ll find another way.

The road stretched ahead, a narrow ribbon of asphalt cutting through dense, foreboding woods. The headlights of their car cast long, eerie shadows, and the silence was oppressive, broken only by the hum of the engine and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.

Minutes turned into what felt like hours as they drove deeper into the night. The trees grew taller, their branches intertwining to form a canopy that blocked out the moonlight. The road, once smooth, now became rough and uneven, jostling the car with every pothole and bump.

April’s eyes caught movement ahead. A faint figure appeared in the distance, illuminated by their headlights. Eddie, look! There’s someone up ahead.

Eddie slowed the car, his eyes narrowing as he focused on the figure. It was a woman, her clothes torn and dirty, standing in the middle of the road, waving her arms frantically. Should we stop? he asked, uncertainty lacing his words.

April nodded. We can’t just leave her out here. She looks like she needs help.

Eddie pulled the car to a stop a few feet away from the woman. April rolled down her window, leaning out cautiously. Are you okay? Do you need help?

The woman stumbled forward, her eyes wide with fear. Please... help me, she whispered, her voice trembling. He’s coming.

April’s heart raced as she opened the door and stepped out. She reached out to the woman, who collapsed into her arms, her body shaking. Eddie hurried around the car to help, and together they guided her into the back seat.

As they settled her in, April noticed the blood. It soaked through the woman’s clothes, her hands stained red. Eddie, she’s hurt badly. We need to get her to a hospital.

Eddie nodded, his face pale. He got back behind the wheel and sped off, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror every few seconds. Who’s coming? What did she mean? he asked, his voice tight with fear.

April looked back at the woman, who had slumped against the seat, her breathing shallow.
