CHAPTER ONE
THIS WAS WHAT it must feel like to get too close to the sun, he thought. The heat scorched the flesh on his face, the light searing his corneas. And no matter how hard he tried, he could not turn away. They’d seen to that, with thick leather straps biting into the flesh on his forehead.
He did attempt to, but to turn his head away was futile.
When he realized his arms and legs were also restrained was when panic set in. He struggled against the restraints.
Help,
he choked past a dry throat, cracked lips.
At the sound of his own voice his head throbbed, ears rang. In the background, muffled voices could be heard through the fog he felt encompass him. His heart raced as their words became distinct.
He shouldn’t have come back so quickly,
a male voice broke the steady hum that surrounded him.
The reality of his situation caught his breath, brought perspiration to his forehead.
Do you think the project didn’t work after all?
Another male voice replied, this one shakier.
Come back to where? What project?
How the hell am I supposed to know, James? I was given as much information on this whole shit show as you.
Above him, the pair became visible as they leaned in close, their faces blocking the bright white light that beat down on him.
The red-head lifted a finger, moved it from side to side in front of his face.
Do you think he can see us? Hear us?
He fought the pull to follow the finger, instead stared forward, eyes blank, mind racing.
The blond leaned closer, narrowed his brow, and studied his face.
He shouldn’t even be awake yet, Kyle. The others aren’t. The job is not done. If it was, someone would have notified us.
So, the red-head was Kyle.
Yes, someone would have.
He stepped back out of sight only to return with a clipboard in his hands, his attention on it.
None of this makes sense. They weren’t to be awakened until their objective was complete.
He shook his head, lowered the clipboard.
Stilhz was the last of the subjects to be exposed.
And he was Stilhz.
Stilhz swallowed the lump in his throat as his mind tore through what he knew. And it wasn’t much. If he was honest with himself, he hadn’t even remembered his own name until Kyle said it, let alone where he was or who these men were.
The boss is gonna flip when he finds out.
The men turned from Stilhz to each other, then stepped from his view.
Stilhz’s heart pounded in his chest, beat against his rib cage and the restraints holding him down.
He scanned the room, took in all he could see, which was as little as he knew. White walls, high ceilings, no
