About this ebook

"Just fuck my life," I snarl, "I need some fresh air."
"I see you're still in a bad mood," a familiar, hated voice drawls, dripping with with arrogance.
Jaxon leans against the wall beside me, the heat from his body radiating like a furnace. Some sick impulse inside me wants to lean against him, just to see how it feels, but there's no way in hell I'm allowing that to happen.
"Maybe if you would stop stalking me, I wouldn't be," I snap, turning my back to him.
He lets out a low snort. "Please. I just keep running into you by accident."
"Well, you won't have to worry about that soon."
"And why is that?" he asks, a hint of curiosity creeping into his voice.
I meet his eyes, but the intensity is too much, so I look away. "Why do you care? You'll be Alpha soon, and you can continue fucking all the pack sluts your heart desires. That's if you even have a heart," I growl bitterly.
Melanie Stokes is Alpha Damon’s eldest daughter and heir. Jaxon Miller is the fatherless male wolf that snatches the title right from underneath her. Kissed by the Moon Goddess - Destiny B

    Chapter 46

    Mel's POV

    Wake up, sleeping beauty.

Jaxon's husky, velvety voice pulls me from my sleep. I sit up, rubbing my eyes. Fuck, what time is it? I grumble.

    5am.

Oh great...wait 5am? I send a glare in his direction. He gazes back at me, standing in the doorway, wearing only a pair of grey sweatpants. His chiseled chest is dripping with sweat, his abs just begging to be licked.

Holy shit. What a sight to wake up to!

Yeah, we gotta do patrol, Beta, Jaxon says with a smirk. I went to the packhouse and grabbed you a change of clothes and your outfit for the funeral since we didn't plan to sleep over here. He tosses the clothing onto the bed.

I'm only wearing one of his T-shirts, so it was really thoughtful of him to wake up early to grab my clothes. Last night, after we had sex, we returned to his mom's house, and he let me take his bed while he slept on the couch downstairs.

Thanks, I say, feeling my cheeks burning with embarrassment. I hope he didn't catch me staring at him like a thirsty idiot.

He nods and leans against the doorframe, as if waiting for me to get dressed.

Uhm, do you mind? I ask, gesturing towards the door so he could leave.

He raises an eyebrow. So, you can cream all over my dick in the middle of the forest, but I can't see you get dressed?

My core clenches, and memories of last night flood my mind. A rush of heat surges to my lower belly. Get out, Jaxon! I snap.

But it's too late. Jaxon's nostrils flare as he picks up my arousal. His eyes darken with a raw, intense hunger that has my legs trembling. My body seems to have a mind of its own this morning, wanting him to devour it.

Let him do it, Nina purrs.

    Oh, my body and Nina.

I watch Jaxon's eyes flicker between green and silver, a clear sign he's fighting with his wolf. A moment later he wins the fight, his expression tightening as he turns to leave. I'll wait for you outside, he mutters, barely meeting my eyes. The funeral is only a few hours away, so we need to finish patrol.

Disappointment settles in my stomach like a lead weight. Is he done with us having sex? Does he not want me anymore?

Jaxon, I call out in panic.

He pauses, looking over his shoulder. Hmm?

I was thinking we could continue having sex, I say, trying to sound casual. I chew on my lip, hoping he doesn't pick up the desperation in my voice. You know, casually.

He seems to hesitate, and for a split second, I think I see pain flash across his features. I'm not sure because if I blinked, I would've missed it. He nods nonchalantly. Okay, he replies before walking out of his room, closing the door quietly behind him.

I press my hands to my face, groaning. What am I doing? Another fuckbuddy, really, Melanie? Have I not learned anything from last time?

It's only a matter of time before Jaxon finds his true mate and I'm alone once again. I must be a glutton for heartbreak because I'm already messing up the unspoken no strings attached clause of the fuckbuddy agreement. How can you have casual sex with someone you are catching feelings for?

    —————————————-

Jaxon is unusually quiet, besides occasionally barking orders to the other wolves on the morning shift. I wonder what he's thinking about. What if he's immediately regretting the agreement between us? I can't help but feel tense, like at any moment, he'll come up to me and tell me that he decided he doesn't want me.

After running the perimeter, we return to Elinda's house and get ready for Mom's funeral. I put on a simple black dress and heels. After applying black winged mascara to my eyes, I comb out my hair and leave it curly—just the way Mom liked it.

While Moon and Ava finish getting dressed, I go downstairs to find Elinda in the kitchen making breakfast. My feelings are still a little sore from last night, but it is what it is. Today's not about my problems. It's about saying goodbye to Mom.

Elinda gives me a weak smile, her eyes carrying a hint of guilt. Good morning, she says softly.

Good morning, I repeat, matching her subdued tone. She's already shown me her true colors, but I'm going to make a scene today. This isn't the time or place.

That dress looks really nice on you, she continues. It seems like she's trying to break the tension, but I'm not in the mood to hear what she has to say.

Thanks, I mumble, sitting down at the table as I wait for my sister. The air grows thick with unspoken words, and I can feel her eyes on me as she moves around the kitchen. She turns back to me as she's plating breakfast. I...I want to apologize for last night. It wasn't fair to assume-

What, that I'm just one of your son's whores? I snap, my anger rising to the surface. That instead of working my ass off to get to where I am, I just got down on my knees instead?

Shit. I promised myself I wouldn't get worked up about this, but she brought it up, not me. Now I'm just finishing it.

Elinda's gaze drops to the countertop, her shoulders slumping. Yeah, she mumbles.

I take a deep breath, letting go of some of my anger. Well, like you said, you raised him better than that. Jaxon's a great Alpha, I couldn't corrupt him even if I tried.

She nods, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.

    Chapter 47

    Mel's POV

Suddenly, Jaxon walks into the kitchen, carrying both Moon and Ava in his arms. He's wearing a black suit, one that reminds me of how much he's Goddess's gift to women. Breakfast time! he announces, grinning as he sets them down.

The girls giggle as they run over to the table. Moon plops into the chair beside me, staring up at me with a smile. Mel, do you think my dress is pretty? she asks, her big brown eyes full of hope. She's wearing a black dress with a purple bow, Mom's favorite color.

Of course, Moon, I say, trying to match her enthusiasm despite the fact I feel like shit. You look like a princess!

Her smile is so radiant, it momentarily chases away the darkness of the day ahead.

Do you think Mom will think it's pretty?

The obnoxious lump in my throat returns, but I quickly swallow it. Yes. I know she'll love it, I whisper, trying to keep my emotions in check.

When are we going to meet your boyfriend, Mel?

My face flushes. Um, about that-

You look like a princess too, but I wish you were Jaxon's princess, not Malcom's.

The heat that floods my scalding. Please, kill me.

I don't even have to look at Jaxon to know that he isn't thrilled about that comment. The muscle in his jaw is probably clenching, and I can practically feel the tension radiating from him.

Just when I think it can't get any worse, Moon continues, Mel had a boyfriend a long time ago. Kevin. I liked him, he always gave me candy.

Kevin wasn't my boyfriend, I reply, my voice tighter than intended.

Then, why did he always sneak into the house at night when Mom and Dad were sleeping? she asks, her voice far too loud.

Yep, I'm going to die of embarrassment right at this table.

Princess Moon, I made your favorite—Pancakes! Elinda interjects, saving me from further humiliation. Moon's eyes light up as she looks at the stack of pancakes in front of her, her attention thankfully diverted.

I exhale in relief, feeling the pounding in my chest slowly subside. Elinda places our plates on the table before sitting down with her own. We eat mostly in silence while the girls talk about various kid shows. I can't help but keep glancing across the table at Jaxon. His face is a mask of indifference, and I can't lie—it's really bothering me. What's his problem? Is he bothered by what Moon said, or is he just in a shitty mood? I plan to ask him about it later, but for now, I need to focus on getting Moon through this funeral.

We take separate cars to the packhouse, so Elinda can take the girls home after the service. Pack members are already gathering near the river where Mom's body lays in a beautiful wooden coffin. She's going to be buried beneath the biggest oak tree in the forest. Then, tonight we'll hunt and have a huge feast to honor her life.

Moon and I stand beside the coffin, surrounded by the entire pack, while the Elders say a prayer to the Moon Goddess. I know Bliss is here, but I can't bear to look at anyone else. I keep my gaze on Mom, hoping she'll open her eyes, and this will all have been just a terrible joke.

But I know that's not going to happen.

Mom's dressed in a white dress, and her curly hair lays loosely around her shoulders. There's a faint smile on her lips, and it just makes my heart ache more knowing she was in so much pain that the horrible way she ended it all was actually more peaceful than life.

I squeeze Moon's hand, both to comfort her and anchor myself to the reality of the moment. It's time for us to say our final goodbyes. Moon brushes back a strand of hair on her face. Hey Mommy, it's me, Moon. Daddy is gone too, but I'm glad I have Mel and Ms. Elinda and Ava and Jaxon. I miss you. I hope I get to see you again one day. She kisses her on the cheek before coming back to grab my hand. Mel, are you going to say something? she asks, looking up at me.

Uh yeah, I whisper, trying to remember how to breathe. I urge Moon to go find Elinda, then approach the casket, standing over Mom's body in silence. I think about the good memories we had long ago—tea parties, picking flowers in the forest, cooking together. If I'd known that the night Moon was born would be the last time I'd see Mom happy, I would have cherished those memories more.

I'm in a fog, a dark world of my own, until I realize we've moved into the forest and Mom's casket is being lowered into the ground. A storm brews in my eyes, my throat burning from the agony. I want to break down, but I can't. I'm Beta now—there's no room for vulnerability. I can't cry. I refuse to.

Suddenly, I feel a gentle hand on my back. If you need me, I'm here, Jaxon murmurs beside me.

I do need him. I need him to fuck me, to take me far from my thoughts, where the pain can't reach. But that will have to wait. For now, I just nod, keeping my gaze fixed on the ground as the dirt begins to cover the casket.

Everyone who isn't family, make your way back to the packhouse. Now. Jaxon orders. I hear the rustle of footsteps as people start to leave, but I don't lift my head.

Where's Moon? I ask him, my voice tight with emotion.

She went with my mom, he replies, his hand returning to my back. Even through the chaos and grief, his touch seems to make everything a little more bearable.

Oh. It's all I can manage to say.

He doesn't say anything else, just stays by my side as we watch the two male Omegas finish covering the crave, the quiet shoveling sounds echoing around us. Then, an unfamiliar wave of energy washes over me. Three powerful, unsettling auras. I glance towards the edge of the forest and see two men and a woman dressed in black robes. They stand still, their eyes locked on me.

Their presence chills my blood—they're creepy as hell. The way they hold themselves, they seem to absorb all the light around them, their black robes blending with the shadows. Nina rises inside of me, growling lowly in my head—she must sense danger.

Jaxon's body grows rigid, and he instantly
