    Sixteen winters and you don't know what to do with your life, I chided myself. I wrapped my fingers around the hairy stem of a weed and gave a sharp tug. It snapped off, smearing its sticky sap on my hand. Sighing, I reached behind me for the spade, and loosened the soil around the long tap root. My skills didn't lie with farming, but I hadn't found anything I could do better.

    The clamour of the meeting bell floated up from the valley. I could decide my future later. Stopping only to wash my hands and slick my hair back behind my ears, I hurried to the grassy circle in the middle of the village. The black squat bulk of a planetary hopper sat at one edge, its base obscured by the surrounding children.
