    PROLOGUE

On Halloween 1982, Detective Harold Johnston of the West Hollywood Homicide Division arrived at Mrs. Ellen Griffin Dunne's house in Beverly Hills. He noticed her wheelchair and the collection of glass hippos on her shelf. The closest murder had ever come to this house was in the Georges Simenon novel. Johnston informed her that her daughter had been strangled by John Sweeney. Despite being placed on life support at CedarsSinai hospital, Dominique Dunne was still alive. The detective asked if anyone she'd like to call, and the daughter's father was the first to come to mind. The detective handed the phone back to the daughter, who needed him and was on the next plane. The father's next call was to the protagonist, who felt lost and unsure if he was dreaming or not.

    PART ONE

    ONE

The author's mother was the only child of a cattle rancher, Tom Griffin, who raised Santa Gertrudis cattle on his father's ranch in Nogales, Arizona. Tom was born into a prominent family that made a fortune in the Griffin Wheel Company, which manufactured wheels for Pullman train cars. His uncles were playboys and philanderers who often found their shenanigans in the gossip columns of the Chicago dailies.

In the mid-1920s, Tom's great-great-uncle George Griffin died of a heart attack while in bed with his mistress, Rose Davies, sister of movie star Marion Davies and the mistress of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. To prevent a national scandal, George's crew dressed him in pajamas and checked his corpse into the Breakers Hotel.

His wife, Helen Prindeville Griffin, was widowed and proposed to marry Tom to be her date at her late husband's funeral. The family used Union Pacific to divert the train and passengers, denying them their grand entrance to the funeral. Helen inherited every cent of George's enormous fortune.

Scandal visited the next generation of Griffins a decade later, when Tom married a woman from an equally prominent family. He boarded a Pullman car and headed westward to begin his new life as a rancher in Nogales.

The author's brother and sister used to cross the border into Mexico on foot with a pack of cousins, visiting a restaurant called La Roca, where Tom played El ternero perdido, or The Lost Calf. The audience would cry in relief when the alto trumpeter played the song, showcasing the family's love for their cattle ranch.

The text describes a family's trip to La Roca, where they danced on top of a rock that once housed La Caverna. The family gathered to cross the border and stayed at a cousin's house across the border. The next morning, the family watched a movie on television about settlers traveling the frontier in wagon trains, and their grandmother, Ellen Beatriz Griffin, was named after her. Beatriz's family had been in Mexico for over two hundred years and were raised to consider themselves Mexicans. Beatriz's grandfather, José Sandoval, owned silver mines, fishing, pearl concessions, and major real estate. The Sandovals were on the wrong side of the Mexican Revolution, so they fled to the safety of Baja California before eventually settling in Nogales. Beatriz's brother Alfredo was imprisoned twice for embezzling from a bank, and Beatriz followed her to the end of her life. Tom Griffin met Beatriz in Nogales and they eloped. Beatriz sent telegrams to her intended husband, who was on an overnight train from Mexico City to Nogales for their wedding.

The text describes the story of Ellen Griffin, a young woman who was romanticized by her mother and a lonely child during World War II. She recalls a moment when she thought her father had come home because an officer's uniform was crumpled at the foot of the bed. The author, who was also raised in Arizona, was surprised to learn that the future senator's father was Admiral John S. McCain, commander in chief of Pacific Command. The author's mother, who was also an embezzler, never mentioned the subject again. After graduating from Miss Porter's, Griffin attended the University of Arizona before heading to New York to pursue her dream of being on Broadway. She stayed at the ladies-only Barbizon Hotel, where curfew was enforced and men were not allowed beyond the lobby. Despite her unconventional appearance, Griffin loved the city and children, and decided to wait for the right man.

    TWO

The author's father, a local hero in West Hartford, Connecticut, performed the first open-heart surgery in recorded history. The operation was performed on an eight-year-old boy who had caught a bullet accidentally by his father. The operation was considered as much
