The 4 Pillars of Herbalism - Ingrid Clarke

    Introduction

In this book, I will share the four pillars of herbalism that can shape how you understand herbal healing. As such, plants are potent in helping our bodies return to normal function by stimulating, supporting, restraining, and retraining different parts of us. Herbalism will also help you to realize your connection with the planet and re-establish a trusting relationship with nature.

Moreover, herbalism is deeply rooted in your genes, and when used wisely, it can be an excellent asset for restoring balance to your body. During challenging times in one’s health journey, herbalism can show you how to restore harmony among the different elements of your being. In fact, plant-based healing has a remarkable influence that can help to bring shifts back into alignment. With its therapeutic effects, herbalism works harmoniously with your body for the most balanced outcome.

Amid daily stresses and duties, we often forget to take time for self-care. Work and family responsibilities, anxieties, unexpected events, and inevitable life changes can leave us unhealthy, unhappy, and feeling like we cannot do anything about our compromised state. Having suffered severe burnout before, and as someone who hailed from a Scandinavian family with neo-pagan roots, I devoted myself to studying different healing methods and accumulated pearls of wisdom from metaphysical practices and occult traditions from around the world. As an empath, it is my mission to share my lifelong experiences and comprehensive knowledge from years of research with those who need healing.

This book takes a simple approach to herbalism. The first two chapters overview how people use herbs to feel better in difficult times and uncover herbal traditions worldwide. It will also share foundational concepts on natural health and how to integrate them into your life. Meanwhile, a deeper dive is taken in chapters three to five, exploring how to source, prepare, and safely handle healing herbs. Then chapter six reveals the healing properties of over 60 plants, herbs, and flowers, while the last chapter provides beginner-friendly remedies for 50+ typical health issues. You will find 143 techniques, tips, and strategies to improve your health naturally. It’s peppered throughout the entire book and it’s intentionally designed this way to serve as your guide along each step of the process. As a beginner, this book gives you all the information you need to start your journey with herbalism.

Since I have struggled with physical and mental pain, I always sought solutions to ease my stress and improve my well-being. Fortunately, I got to open my eyes to the countless simple yet powerful ways of herbal healing. All the research and techniques I found were outlined in this book. Through these herbal healing methods, I gained a sense of comfort and relief. Now, when I am feeling distressed, I can confidently turn to the power of medical herbs. Likewise, this newfound knowledge has helped me become more in tune with my body, enabling me to identify the root cause of my ailments. I no longer feel helpless or in the dark about my physical and mental health. Instead, I have taken control of my recovery and well-being.

The end goal of this book is to help you in your healing journey to self-care. Yet, it is not designed to replace any doctor’s recommendations. Instead, it offers a different perspective on medicine and will help you integrate medicinal plants into your life when the situation deems fit. To become more capable of taking care of yourself and gaining a sense of empowerment, this book will provide you with all the guidance you need. With various paths in the plant medicine world, it will be your blueprint for self-reliance and confidence.

Overall, this book aims to make the ancient knowledge of herbalism available and understandable to anyone interested in discovering it. By simplifying and organizing the information, I have created a resource that provides an efficient path to learning about herbal medicine. With some education, you can begin to take care of yourself through the healing power of herbs, and you may find that the ailments you face become less chronic or disappear altogether. Likewise, pains that have plagued you for years will diminish, and you will become revitalized and refocused on your overall health and well-being. Hence, when you finish reading this book, you will have peace of mind that you can have a better proactive and backup plan for your health.

Attaining balance and restoring connection with nature are the guiding principles behind my techniques and strategies to unlock the power of herbalism. With many ancient remedies discussed throughout this book, you can use thousands of years of wisdom to reconnect with your body. Each chapter in this book will teach you the different theories and techniques you can use in your plant healing journey. It will allow you to learn alternative ways—through medicinal herbs—to care for yourself and your loved ones while fostering independence and self-sufficiency.

    Pillar 1

    Foundation

With the ever-growing interest in herbalism and alternative medicine, it is time to dig its roots. In this pillar, we uncover the definition, history, and development of herbalism and various world traditions in this field. As such, chapter one will discuss what herbalism is, while chapter two dives into African Folk, Arabic Unani, Indian traditional, European heritage, Mesoamerican, Traditional Chinese, and Iroquois systems of herbal-based medicines. By the end of this discussion, you will have enough information to help you decide if herbalism is right for you and understand your next steps.

    Definition

The practice of herbalism has been around for millennia and thus has been well-defined alongside modern medicine. In this chapter, we will define herbalism, investigate the history of herbal practices, and draw similarities between herbal medicine and modern medicine to understand the historical significance of herbalism in medicinal culture.

    What is Herbalism?

Herbalism can be defined as a traditional medicinal or folk medicine practice based on the use of plants (Wiki Contributors, 2021). These medicines make use of therapeutic remedies and allopathic medicines for the treatment of illnesses. Herbalism or botanical medicine often includes organic products like fungi and bee products. Many people from different cultures often locate these herbs in various locations for healing. Other materials, such as minerals, shells, or animal byproducts, are also used in herbalism. Likewise, organic materials are essential in herbalism to provide health benefits, aid with health concerns, and maintain overall health. Also, herbs and spices used in seasoning food have medicinal properties, as they have antimicrobial capabilities which can be harnessed to fight against any foodborne pathogens. By understanding and utilizing these organic materials, herbalism enables us to use natural remedies to look after ourselves and our animals.

Medicinal plants are often rich in secondary metabolites, such as tannins and alkaloids. These chemicals often have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties for various medicinal uses. They can be used in a variety of different ways. Aromatherapy is a form of herbalism that incorporates oils and aromatic herbs for relaxation and mild relief. Similarly, herbal practices such as Indian herbalism, Ayurveda, and Chinese herbal practices enforce good health through the balance of the mind and body. In this way, herbalism takes many forms to provide relief, including plant leaves, stems, flowers, seeds, bark, and fruits. These herbal medicines not only cure the disease but can help to prevent bodily ailments in the future. Herbalism also provides a great alternative to allopathic alternatives. Around 88% of the world’s population is estimated to integrate herbal medicinal practices into their daily lives (World Health Organization, n.d.). The herbs used for common illnesses will depend on those available areas.

For example, herbalism employed in wetlands may look completely different from those in drier land areas. Likewise, the most common herbs used will vary depending on the illnesses most likely to be contracted in those areas. In some cases, herbal remedies treat ailments better than allopathic care. Alternative medicines are often extracted from plants and herbs to form extracts, pills, syrups, or powders. In the modern age, they have been commercialized to the point that herbal remedies can be found at your local drugstore. On the other hand, Herbalists have diagnosed these problems by conducting interviews to identify the symptoms to be treated. After which, a herbal remedy is recommended with the required dosage. Only the recommended dosage should be taken to avoid poor side effects due to over-dosage.

Meanwhile, dried leaves and herbs are often preferred over fresh ones, as dry herbs are more nutrient-rich. This is usually done by hanging these plants in a well-ventilated, shaded, and cool area. The sun tends to dry these plants out, stripping them of oils that may remove their healing properties. Roots, on the other hand, have to be chopped and cleaned before they are dried. They are stored in glass jars and non-metallic containers in a cool, dry area until needed. Lastly, home-brewed medicinal teas are the best way to consume herbal remedies. The herbs are steeped in boiling water to brew a strong tea.
