Summary of Consent by Jill Ciment ( Keynote reads ) - Keynote reads

    1

The author recounts her experience with an older man who preyed on her at the age of sixteen. The art teacher, who had admired her drawings, was surprised when she wrote her own personal check to pay for life drawing classes. The teacher praised her innate talent and encouraged her to move to New York City to become an artist. The author was impressed by the art teacher's criticism and praise of her drawings.

However, the author also questioned her agency to consent, as the teenage brain is impulsive and there is a mismatch between the limbic system and the prefrontal lobe. California's age of consent is eighteen, but the author's behavior, including the extra attention he gave her in class and his use of her arm to demonstrate how tendons cross over the elbow, does not qualify as child grooming.

The author also questions whether the art teacher's behavior qualifies as child grooming, a term psychologists use to describe a pedophile's recruitment techniques. At the end of the semester, the art teacher whispered to the author that she wished she was older, which the author replied as I'm old enough.

The author recounts a memorable moment in her memoir, Half a Life, where she kissed her art teacher, Arnold, without any coyness or blush. Arnold, at the same age as the author, was the same age as the author. The author recalls the moment, and the author is certain that Arnold was the instigator. The author reflects on the importance of the story of how a couple meets, who kisses whom first, and who declares their love first. The ownership of these memories is wrested back and forth between the parties, and the author questions whether to refer to Arnold as a sexual offender, transgressor, abuser of power, letches, cradle-robbers, dogs, Casanova, silver fox, or the author as a victim or survivor.

The author also discusses the time it takes to re-create a moment from their past, as the memory of writing the memoir slowly accumulates until it usurps the events they are trying to capture. The author daydreams about Arnold pulling her to him and kissing her for weeks or months afterward, longer than it took to write the scene. The author knows who kissed whom first because she daydreamed about Arnold pulling her to him and kissing her for weeks or months afterward.

The text describes the author's relationship with Arnold, who she had a kiss with. She was furious with her mother for involving Arnold's wife in their affair, and she was in love with him. She shared a bed with her mother, who had moved out the year before.

The author's life took a turn for the worse when she lost her job at Escapades, a sex parlor. She returned to LA, feeling defeated and delusional. She borrowed her mother's car to see Arnold, who was asleep in a lamplight. She leaned over him, hushed
