Antiarrhythmics in Critical Care
Cardiac dysrhythmias result from disorders of impulse formation or conduction in the heart and may stem from myocardial ischemia, sensitivity to autonomic transmitters, exposure to toxic substances, or an unknown etiology. Anti-arrhythmic drugs (AADs) are classified according to their effect on the action potential and are useful in controlling both atrial and ventricular dysrhythmias. Dysrhythmias can result in a state of hypotension and quickly degenerate into other dangerous dysrhythmias. However, some of the medications used to treat dysrhythmias can have life-threatening adverse effects. Therefore, knowledge of each drug is essential.
AADs are categorized by the Vaughan-Williams (VW) System. This system classifies drugs on the basis of their primary mechanism of action, though some drugs
