      Chapter 9 Disillusion

      I'm happy for you. A familiar voice echoed in her ears. You're moving on.

      I could never move on, she replied. I am just trying to fill the void gouged into my heart.

      Is that why you pretend? His voice had a knowing lilt.

      You saw that, did you? She knew he was referring to her calling Buck 'daddy.'

      She could feel his breath against her ear as his voice whispered, That is a bit unhealthy.

      I've never been a very healthy girl, she whispered back. Despite the darkness, she felt the side of her face press against his chest, his arms wrapping around her. She could feel his warmth, hear his heartbeat, and when she took a deep breath, his musk, those familiar sandalwood and apple notes, filling her nostrils. You are all I've ever wanted.

      She felt his hand gently stroke her hair. You didn't love me. You loved what I made you feel.

      She shook her head, feeling tears forming in her closed eyes. No, no! That isn't true! I just said it because I was angry! I didn't mean it!

      He replied calmly. People speak honestly when they are angry.

      She buried her face into his chest, her tears staining his faded black shirt. No! People say things that they regret!
