Lee Hacklyn Private Investigator in Late Knight - John Leister

    CHAPTER ONE

    NEW YORK CITY.  1974.

    What’s my name?

My eyes opened to the barrel of my Browning.  The naked woman straddling me was holding it with her right hand and he left hand was pulling on my hair.  Ouch.

She had short curly red hair and her cute, but angry face, was peppered with adorable freckles.

I looked at her alarm clock.  3:30 am.

    Good morning.

That’s not my name.  Try again.  You don’t think I’ll blow your pretty face off?  I’ll tell the cops you tried to rape me.  They’ll believe me, too.

She wasn’t wrong.  Every cop at NYPD was chomping at the bit to see me screw up and land a prison sentence.  Cops hate private eyes, even the good ones, like me.  That’s a minority opinion, to say the least.

    M.  Her first name starts with an M.  Maxine?  Oh, fuck it!

I pushed her armed hand up.

    She fired into the ceiling.

I just had to go to that stupid bar.  I just had to get stupid drunk.  I just couldn’t go to bed tonight without a little...um...psychotic female company.

What’s wrong with staying home and watching television?  Not a damn thing, according to non-dogmatic, non-binding, ever in flux LeeHacklynism.

She screamed and yanked on my hair.

She slipped away, stood and fired again, as I rolled off her bed and landed hard on the floor.

    THUD!

She ran around the bed, screaming.  This was one determined gal.  I kicked her legs out from under her feet and she fell next to me.  I was naked, too.  If this was her idea of foreplay, neither of us was going to survive another round of sex.  I took my gun away from her, safed it, found my shoulder-holster, strapped it on and slapped it
