The young man— hardly more than a boy really though he thought of himself as a man, had shouldered a man’s responsibilities— guided the dark blue Subaru Outback along Interstate 90 toward Livingston, where he fully intended to head south on US 89 for Wyoming. Anything to get out and away from Montana.

Snow flurries blurred the landscape to an even gray and white, but that didn’t worry him. Every Montanan knew how to drive in snow, and he was born and bred to the bone-deep chill of the state’s winter weather.

He drove carefully, staying within the speed limit though he wanted to race the wind. Wouldn’t do to be pulled over for speeding. Not while driving a stolen car. So he held his impulses in check and obeyed the law. For now.

Glancing to the right, he allowed his gaze to rest on his passenger. On the love of his short life. The moment he’d seen her in the shabby homeless shelter in Billings, he’d known she was the one. Since then he’d done everything he knew how to protect and provide for her. Including boosting this ride from the grocery store’s frigid parking lot.

If they could just get out of Montana, everything would be fine. They’d reinvent themselves, claim new identities. Get real jobs. Make a life together.

That was his Christmas wish— the only one he ever remembered making— to escape the hell of their past lives and start fresh somewhere else.
