Introduction
Overview of social media evolution (last 10-15 years)
In the last decade and a half, social media has woven itself into the very fabric of our daily existence. What started as a quirky way to keep tabs on friends and family has ballooned into a sprawling, vibrant ecosystem touching nearly every part of modern life.
The story kicked off in the early 2000s with platforms like Friendster in 2002 and MySpace in 2003. Friendster paved the way for social networks, letting users connect, share photos, and discover new content. MySpace took this further, becoming the top social media platform of its time with customizable profiles and a focus on music-sharing that captivated users.
Then came Facebook in 2004. Initially a Harvard-only affair, it quickly spread to other universities and then opened up to the public by 2006. Facebook’s knack for connecting people through shared networks and interests set a new standard for social media. The 2006 introduction of the News Feed was a game-changer, giving users real-time updates from friends and favourite pages.
As Facebook grew, competitors sprang up. Twitter launched in 2006, offering real-time, short-form communication with its 140-character tweets (later expanded to 280). It became the go-to spot for breaking news and live updates. LinkedIn, which started in 2003, carved out its niche as the top professional networking site, focusing on career development and business connections.
The late 2000s and early 2010s saw a boom in visually-oriented platforms. YouTube, launched in 2005, revolutionized video sharing, making it a breeze to upload, share, and view videos. Instagram, debuting in 2010, skyrocketed in popularity with its simple interface and powerful photo filters, especially among younger users. Pinterest, which went live in 2010 and officially launched in 2011, offered a unique way to discover and curate visual content, from home décor ideas to delicious recipes.
Snapchat burst onto the scene in 2011, bringing a fresh twist with its ephemeral content. Disappearing messages and stories tapped into a craving for more private, temporary communication, prompting other platforms to follow suit. Vine followed in 2013, making short-form video content a thing, though it eventually bowed out in 2017 due to stiff competition from Instagram and Snapchat.
Then came TikTok in the mid-2010s, capturing the hearts of Gen Z with its snappy short-form videos. After merging with Musical.ly and launching globally in 2017, TikTok’s algorithm-driven feed, showcasing highly engaging and personalized content, set a new bar for user engagement and content
