    Chapter 1 Mental Toughnes

Many of us would be shocked if we were able to go back in time and experience the lives our ancestors led. They endured extreme weather, fear and hunger all the time, dangers, and who knows what else.

Today, when someone is faced with an identical situation, we bring in the camera crews and create a TV series.

Humans are so much stronger than we think. You are included!

Most of us in today's society strive to be successful and are driven by a strong desire to succeed. In every endeavor, the best of us strive to improve. Take the world of sports, as an example. You may have several questions in mind.

What's the difference between an athlete who thrives at the top levels of competition, and one that crumbles when under pressure?

Why do some athletes succeed in difficult times while others struggle?

    * Why do some athletes use negatives aspects to improve their performance, while others let them weaken it?

Why do athletes rebound after losing or failing?

Most people are in agreement that elite athletes who excel at their sport will be those who have developed, implemented, and maintained mental toughness. What exactly is mental strength?

Let's start by addressing some common misconceptions. Many people have a number of faulty assumptions.

    Mental toughness comes inborn.

You will crack when you are under pressure.

Mental toughness is either a virtue or a defect.

People who are mentally tough perform their best at all times.

Truthfully, mental toughness is not something you're born with. You can learn to develop mental toughness, just like you would any other skill. Mental toughness is not a one-size-fits-all concept. There are many levels.

According to the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology (JASP), mental toughness is a psychological advantage you have that enables you to better manage demands placed on you by a sport, such as training and competition. It means that you are more likely than others in your ability and consistency of maintaining focus, control and confidence under pressure.

Mental toughness is the ability of an individual to overcome failures with a positive outlook and remain competitive. This also includes training yourself and getting mentally prepared to deal with challenging situations.

Some sports psychologists define mental toughness in terms of four independent yet interrelated components.

Control is the tendency to act and feel as if you have influence and are able to control your anxiety.

Commitment is the ability to remain deeply engaged in your goal pursuit, even in difficult situations.

The ability to view threats and challenges as an opportunity to grow yourself, to improve your environment.

Confidence is the feeling that you can continue to push yourself in social situations despite any setbacks.

It will give you resilience to overcome challenges, and the ability to cope with subpar performance. Mental toughness will help you maintain your resolve and focus when things do not go according to plan.

The Mentally Tough: Two compelling stories

Everybody faces turbulent times in their life. To cope with the world of today, it is important to learn how to handle uncertainty and control your emotions. Here are some stories about mentally strong people who learned to control their emotions and deal with uncertainty.

Amy Morin is a best-selling author, psychotherapist, and has an entire website dedicated to mental strength. She shared with millions of her social media followers a piece she wrote. Morin's life was filled with heartache and hardship, so she decided to write a book about mental toughness. Morin, a therapist by profession, felt obligated to always pretend that she knew all the answers. It was not intended to be published, but rather a letter that Morin wrote to herself in turbulent times when she questioned her capacity to endure more pain.

Not everyone understood her message. Her article was shared on Facebook by some prominent individuals, while other people talked about her. On a popular talk radio program, she was mentioned. A rival psychologist published her comments on a popular magazine, criticizing certain aspects of her work and expressing disagreement with Amy's views. In an ironic twist, while the media hailed her as a mental-strength expert, Amy struggled with her personal pain. She was worried about the end of her career as an therapist.

Her article was the springboard for a career change. Even encouraged to create a book based on the title of her article. The challenge was accepted, despite her initial doubts about writing a book.

It is an example of someone who remained focused and determined during difficult times. She became stronger mentally and built a successful career. Her book has been published in more than 40 languages, and is a bestseller worldwide. Even three sequels have been written!

A good example of mental toughness is found in the world of sports, where certain athletes are at their peak under pressure and others fall apart. LeBron James shows how mental toughness can keep one at the top of his game.

In response to a question about his uniqueness, King James said that his mental health was a key factor in the success of his career as an athlete. King James has acknowledged that he feels constant pressure as an athlete to perform well, win championships, and excel in each game.

He relies heavily on his mental strength in order to remain at the top level of his sport. His daily regimen includes mental exercises to strengthen his body and brain. Many have been amazed by his longevity. James, who is 37 and currently in his 19th year at the time this article was written, continues to perform at a high level despite being older. James has broken records for the team and remained a leader. All of this can be attributed to his commitment to mental health.

He said that he has to make many sacrifices in order to achieve the winning mentality he has now. It is important to him
