    Angels - Daniel Peter

    Chapter 1 Graphic

    1

    THE ORIGIN

As with every other aspect of the Christian faith, it is best to start our consideration from the very beginning as we seek understanding concerning angels and their ministry. The Bible began with the statement, In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth(Genesis 1:1).

The word "beginning was not suggestive of time as we understand it, rather, it referred to the person of Jesus Christ. The Lord said in Revelation 1:8: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, smith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty". Therefore, Genesis 1:1 could read, In Christ, God created the heaven and the earth.

Essentially, Christ is not just a person but also a location; a place where the presence of God is acknowledged, His rule is adhered to, and the knowledge of Him and His works are aligned with truth. Again, this location is not necessarily physical but one that is accessed by faith. Therefore, in Christ, God created heaven and earth and all the creatures in them. Creation was exclusively done by Him without any assistance from the created beings.

Furthermore, heaven and earth are abodes of dwellings of specific created beings and are parallel to each other. God’s idea for earth was that it would be a reflection of heaven. This was the reason God instructed people like Moses, Noah, Solomon to build structures in accordance with the pattern inspired by God Himself. For example, He told Moses "… look that thou make them after their pattern, which was showed thee in the mount as he instructed (Exodus 25:40 KJV)". Little wonder that when Jesus Christ was teaching His disciples how to pray, He said: … pray, then, that His will may be done, on earth as in heaven (Matthew 6:10). In order to ensure order on the earth, God usually sets one of the creatures over earth to manage it, thus, giving the creature the right and ability to dominate other creatures within earth. Just as God reigns as King in heaven, this chosen creature will be given the privilege of reigning over earth as king, although he himself is subject to God's rule.

According to scriptures, the first creature that was given right over the earth was Lucifer. Long before the creation of Adam, Lucifer led civilisations on earth. This can be understood when we carefully consider God's speeches about him in Isaiah 14: 12-14:

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!’ For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High (KJV)".

The highlighted section in the scriptural text above implies that the earth was Lucifer’s abode before he thought to "ascend into heaven". Eventually, Lucifer lost his place as the leader of the earth after he was cast down to earth by heaven’s residents.

The activities of Satan resulted in a departure from Christ; from the acknowledgement of God’s presence, adhering to His rules, and from the true knowledge of Him and His works. Jesus Christ, said about Satan: … He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him… (John 8:44). If he did not abide in the truth (which is Jesus Christ), it means that he was initially in the truth but departed. Not just Satan, but God’s creatures that were submitted to Satan’s rule during his rebellion departed with him. Though God created them, they were no longer subject to the rule of God as their king, rather, they formed what is now known as the kingdom of darkness.

Generally, the creatures of God that remained with Him after the rebellion of Lucifer are called angels, while those that fell with Lucifer are referred to as fallen angels. Psalms 103:20 states: "Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word (NKJV)". God’s angels obey the word of God, why fallen angels obey the word of the devil.

The state of the earth after the fall of the devil was described in Genesis 1:2, where it was written: "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the water". The word "darkness" used in this verse was translated from the Hebrew word choshek, and it is figuratively used to mean wickedness, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness, and obscurity. The meanings of the word choshek all suggest the influence of the kingdom of darkness. Therefore, when the Bible recorded,… and darkness was upon the face of the deep, it was simply making reference to the activities of the kingdom of darkness on earth.

    (Re) creation

As we must have understood from what was written previously, between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2, there were years uncounted in the text, where the first occupant of the earth led civilisations. Therefore, what was recorded in Genesis 1 as creation can also be termed "recreation or restoration". Between these two chapters, we noticed a change in order. For example, man was the last to be created in Genesis 1, for he was created on the sixth day after the animals and the trees were already created. However, in Genesis 2, we see that apart from the land that God caused to come out from the water, man was the first to manifest in the natural world in Genesis 2:5-7:

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (KJV).

The difference is that the account of Genesis 1 happened in the Spirit, while the account in Genesis 2 was a physical event. Man is a two-dimensional being created in the Spirit and formed in the natural (from the ground). The fusion of the different parts of man when God breathed into his nostrils, resulted in man becoming a living soul (Genesis 2:7).

God’s intention was that man would be united with Him in spirit, so he would be able to access His mind; he was to implement on earth the divine concepts impressed on his spirit. Therefore, his view and interpretation of the natural world would be based on the revelation of the Spirit (man communicated with God directly by his spirit). When man yielded to the deception of the snake by eating the fruit of knowledge of good and evil that God commanded him not to eat, his spirit became totally disconnected from God and brought a spiritual death that caused a cessation of communication between the spirit of man and God. As a result, man lost the spiritual insight of reality and gained a self-concept that was different from what was initially given by the Spirit of God.

Meanwhile, for the first time in the account of the communication between God and man in the Garden of Eden, God spoke through an external means that the Bible termed, the voice of the Lord. It was recorded in scriptures, "And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou? (Genesis 3:8, 9 KJV)". This was the first indication of the ministry of angels in God’s relationship with man. Based on scriptural understanding, a voice can be a person. For example, John the Baptist said, I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord (John 1:23).

Similarly, in Job 38:1, the Bible records that "… the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said…". This shows that the means of communication (the voice) used here was a whirlwind. Thus, a voice is the means through which God’s words are conveyed to an individual or a group of individuals. We can then infer that since Adam and Eve were the only humans in the Garden of Eden then, the voice they heard walking in the garden was an angel.

When man’s spirit disconnected from God at his fall, it hampered communication between himself and God. Because of this, there became a need for the creatures of heaven to be sent to man on earth with a message. Creatures that undertake such tasks are generally called angels.

    THE NEW CREATION

To further enhance our understanding of angels and their ministry, we must investigate the new creation. As explained in the previous chapter, Satan's fall brought about a departure from Christ. So, when man sinned by eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he and the creatures under his leadership departed from Christ. This departure from Christ was symbolised by his departure from the Garden of Eden.

Evidence of the departure from Christ is seen in the darkness of the world. In Psalm 82:5, God said about the state of man, "They
