Introduction
Welcome to Break Every Chain: A Guide to Self-Deliverance from Singlehood Curses.
In the genesis of humanity, God bestowed upon Adam and Eve a divine command and blessing: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it
(Genesis 1:22, 28; 9:1; 35:11). This directive encapsulated not just a biological imperative but a spiritual calling to participate in God's creative work and to steward the earth in partnership with Him. To remain single, then, might seem to some as a departure from this mandate and a forfeiture of God's blessing. The historical context of singleness adds layers to this perception. In the annals of ancient culture, singleness was often regarded with suspicion, even dread. In the Old Testament, it was not uncommon for singleness to be associated with curses or perceived as a dead end. The notion of legacy and lineage loomed large, and to be single meant, in practical terms, the cessation of one's familial line. Jeremiah, a prophet who lived a single life, was even instructed by God to remain unmarried, serving as a poignant symbol of the impending doom facing Israel (Jeremiah 16:1–4). It's a sobering thought indeed.
But the arrival of Jesus on the earthly stage brought with it a paradigm shift in the perception of singleness. No longer was it relegated to the sidelines of God's kingdom agenda; instead, Jesus elevated the single life to a place of honour and significance. In a poignant exchange with the Pharisees, Jesus spoke of those who willingly embraced singleness for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, referring to them as eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven
(Matthew 19:12). It was a radical reimagining of singleness as a chosen path of devotion and service to God.
Furthermore, Jesus's response to a question about marriage and singleness (Matthew 19:10) took an unexpected turn as he introduced the concept of voluntary eunuchs. This was a departure from conventional Jewish thought, which prioritized marriage and procreation as primary duties. Yet Jesus, in his wisdom, expanded the scope of discipleship to include those who, out of love for the kingdom, willingly embraced a life of celibacy and singleness.
Unfortunately, throughout history, there have been misinterpretations and misapplications of Jesus's words. The third-century theologian Origen famously took Jesus's words literally and castrated himself, an extreme and misguided response to Jesus's teaching. However, at the heart of Jesus's message was not a call to physical castration but a call to wholehearted devotion to the kingdom of God. In essence, what Jesus inaugurated was a new understanding of singleness — one that transcended societal norms and cultural expectations. Singleness, when embraced for the sake of the kingdom, becomes a noble and honourable calling, a pathway to undivided devotion and service to God. It is a reminder that in God's economy, every vocation, whether married or
