    INTRODUCTION

This book is about America and its hope, aiming to help readers understand why America should make them hopeful and why it deserves their hope. Hope is not about optimism, as optimism is a silly attitude towards our fallen world. Hope is a virtue that tells us that things could go well and invites us to take action that might help make that happen. However, America's capacity for hope has been tested in our time, especially by deepening divisions in society.

In times of division, Americans tend to equate the sheer multiplicity of American life with strife and breakdown, leading to despondency and a melodramatic despair in politics. The Constitution was designed to create common ground in society, but many Americans have forgotten that creating common ground is a key purpose of the Constitution and should be a key purpose of their own political and civic action.

Unity in a free and dynamic society does not necessarily mean agreement. While Americans have some basic principles in common, there is enormous room for disagreement within those boundaries. A more unified society would disagree better, constructively and with an eye to how different priorities and goals can be accommodated.

The parties to our various disputes now tend to talk about one another more than they talk to one another, and even very active citizens spend relatively little time in active disagreement for the sake of addressing common problems in practice.

The United States Constitution is a complex and multifaceted framework that aims to address the disunity of contemporary America. It serves as a legal code, institutional framework, policymaking framework, political framework, and a framework for union and solidarity. However, the political vision of the Constitution is often overlooked and needs to be rediscover. The book explores the modes of political action, the ways in which it facilitates the formation of the people it governs, and the various formal and informal institutions and practices it puts in place.

Americans have weakened the capacity of the Constitution to unify them due to frustration with the means by which the system of government pursues cohesion. This frustration is misguided, as the rival constitutional vision often underestimates the need for unity and the difficulty of achieving it, worsening divisions in the hope of facilitating more assertive policy action.

The book aims to understand the character of unity in a modern free society and what the framers of the system might have made of the challenges that our republic confronts in that regard today. The Constitution is meant to enable American self-government on the terms demanded by the Declaration of Independence and in light of
