Understanding Climate Change
Introduction
Climate change, an urgent and existential challenge of our time, is a global phenomenon that spares no one. Its far-reaching consequences threaten our existence, global economy, peace, and societal survival. In this chapter, we will delve into the science of climate change, exploring its causes, effects, and implications.
Understanding the Science of Climate Change
Climate change, which encompasses long-term shifts in temperature, precipitation patterns, and other aspects of the Earth’s climatic system, is a complex phenomenon. While natural factors such as volcanic eruptions and variations in solar radiation have influenced climate and weather patterns throughout history, the current nature, pace, and magnitude of climate change, as we know it today, are primarily driven by human activity.
The leading cause of climate change, influenced by human activities, is the release of certain gases into the air. These gases, like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, trap heat from the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere, leading to a warming effect known as the greenhouse effect. While some of these gases occur naturally,
