How can Mexico use diplomacy to influence its reputation and image?
T
he purpose of this book is to show how Mexico can use diplomacy to influence its reputation and image in the world. A main objective throughout this work is to explain clearly why the reputation and image of a country are and should be a matter of the highest national interest and how diplomacy can influence them.
Before presenting the ways in which Mexico can use diplomacy to improve its image and reputation, chapter one will briefly present a brief definition of diplomacy. This will provide elements to sustain that diplomacy is an essential tool to improve reputation and image, since it is basically through communication-the essence of diplomacy- that Mexico can present itself to the world.
After presenting definitions and elements of diplomacy, chapter two will tackle the concepts of reputation and image of a country. In addition to the definitions, the factors that create and constitute them will be addressed. This will exhibit the topics that the State has to deal with to improve its image and reputation, since these factors can represent topics in which diplomacy can contribute and which can be used to construct a strategic action plan. As it will be explained, an important element in image and reputation is the human mind and the way it processes information about countries. Since this element constitutes one of the main challenges for diplomacy in shaping image and reputation, the result of scientific investigations in this matter will be provided to show the magnitude of the challenge when addressing image and reputation shaping, why State action is required in this matter and why diplomacy can play an important role.
Chapter three will tackle the relevance of reputation and image. It will be explained that a country that is perceived negatively is deprived of important opportunities that hinder its economic development and the chances it has of being taken seriously internationally, whereas a country with a good reputation is better positioned to improve its image, to recover from image crisis and to attract a myriad of positive factors in general -like tourism or investment- than a country with a bad reputation.
Chapter four will present a diagnosis of Mexico´s image and reputation. Although the point of this book is to analyse how diplomacy can improve Mexico´s reputation and image, a diagnosis is necessary to understand the seriousness of the matter. A history of how Mexico´s reputation and image have been formed will be described. This is indispensable to understand not only the present, but to see clearly that Mexico has never had a strategy to present itself to the world, to shape its image and to create a solid positive reputation. The historic description will also provide elements that constitute a guide for what needs to be addressed now and in the future. A diagnosis of the present image of Mexico will also be presented using the results of the only study which has scientifically analysed the image of Mexico between 2006-2015.
After addressing the concepts of diplomacy, reputation and image, their components, the relevance they have for a country, and after a historical and present diagnosis, chapter five will argue that Mexico can use diplomacy to improve its reputation and image in three big sectors: soft power, a new narrative and a new mass media strategy. The contribution of this work, what has not been argued ever before, is that any strategy and new narrative designed by the Mexican state to address its image and reputation will have to
