A Black Boy Misunderstood - Jyquan Stewart

    1

    Introduction

My name is Jy'Quan Arnay Stewart, and I authored this memoir to share my experiences of being labeled a psychopath, facing rejection, being misunderstood, and considered an odd child. Living with autism felt like a curse. For most of my life, I hardly had any friends, and those I did have exploited me. I attempted to make friends, but they perceived my actions as harassment, though my intention was simply to befriend them. At that time, I was unaware that I was on the autism spectrum.

What I'm about to share isn't commonly discussed in schools, psychiatric hospitals, or social services. I was the child always picked last, ostracized for my faith in the Bible. Throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I was deemed weak and misunderstood; no one grasped the reasons behind my actions or what I was truly experiencing. My education took place in the Rensselaer City School District for elementary and middle school, and Sackett for high school, which was a period of sheer torment. My peers perceived me as delusional and psychotic. There was a point in my life when I was medicated and experienced visions of demonic spirits, which I attributed to the medication, termed 'pharmakeia.' I observed a decrease in these visions when my medication was reduced. After enduring these trials, my trust shifted away from doctors, psychologists, caseworkers, police officers, teachers, and the government, and towards Jesus Christ. We should refrain from judging a child without understanding their struggles. My family and school convinced everyone that my experiences were figments of my imagination, that Jesus Christ wasn't real, and that I was hallucinating. These challenges reinforced my faith in God's word over man's, for humans may fail you, but God never will.

I hold the belief that everything in our lives serves a divine purpose, shaping us to be more like Christ. God utilized my past to set me apart from an ungodly world, purifying me and transforming me into a man of God.

Romans Chapter 8 verse 28 KJV states:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
