Nikola Tesla - Dr. Leo Lexicon
Chapter 1
Born Gifted
The Early Spark
Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in the tiny village of Smiljan, nestled in the rugged Lika region of what is now modern-day Croatia. As the fourth of five children born to Milutin Tesla, an Eastern Orthodox priest, and Đuka Mandić, a remarkable woman in her own right, Tesla's early life was shaped by the breathtaking landscape and the strong Serbian Orthodox traditions of his family.
Even from a young age, Tesla exhibited a remarkable talent for mathematics and an insatiable curiosity about the natural world. His father, while strict and demanding, recognized his son's intellectual gifts and encouraged his interests, though he initially hoped Nikola would follow in his footsteps and become a priest. Tesla's mother, on the other hand, was a crucial source of inspiration and support, sharing her own innovative spirit and mechanical prowess, which she had honed through necessity on the family's small farm.
One of the most formative experiences of Tesla's childhood was a moment that would come to define his lifelong fascination with electricity. While walking through the mountains near his home, he witnessed a spectacular lightning storm, and the awe-inspiring display of nature's power and the intricate dance of electricity sparked his imagination. Tesla would later recall this as the first spark
that ignited his passion for understanding the fundamental laws governing the universe.
Another pivotal experience occurred when Tesla was just nine years old and seriously ill with cholera. During this near-death experience, he had a vision of a bright light that he believed was a visitation from the spirit world. This profound encounter left a deep impression on the young Tesla and contributed to his belief in the existence of unseen forces and the potential for humanity to harness them.
Tesla's early education was a mix of formal schooling and self-directed learning. He attended the Serbian Orthodox Primary School in Smiljan, where he excelled in subjects like mathematics and physics, with his teachers recognizing his exceptional abilities and encouraging him to pursue higher education. However, the financial constraints within the family meant that Tesla would have to work diligently to support himself through his studies.

Despite these challenges, Tesla's curiosity and drive only grew stronger. He immersed himself in the works of renowned scientists and thinkers, such as Goethe, Faraday, and Helmholtz, developing a deep understanding of fields like electricity, magnetism, and the nature of matter. This self-taught knowledge would later prove instrumental in Tesla's groundbreaking inventions and innovations.
Next Steps
After completing his primary education, Tesla moved to the nearby town of Gospić to attend the Higher Real Gymnasium, a prestigious secondary school. Here, he continued to excel academically, particularly in mathematics and physics, subjects that captivated his mind and ignited his imagination.
One of Tesla's most influential teachers at the Higher Real Gymnasium was Martin Sekulić, a respected professor of physics who recognized the young student's exceptional talent and potential. Sekulić encouraged Tesla to delve deeper into the principles of electricity and magnetism, exposing him to the latest scientific discoveries and theories of the time.
During his time at the Higher Real Gymnasium, Tesla also developed a lifelong passion for literature and philosophy. He avidly read the works of William Shakespeare, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and other renowned authors, which further expanded his intellectual horizons and shaped his unique perspective on the world.
After graduating, Tesla faced a crossroads – his father had intended for him to follow in his footsteps and become a priest, but Tesla's heart was set on a different path, one that would lead him to become a pioneering electrical engineer and inventor. Determined to pursue his true calling, Tesla enrolled at the Austrian Polytechnic School (now the University of Zagreb) in 1875, where he studied electrical engineering and physics.
Despite the rigorous curriculum and financial challenges, Tesla excelled in his studies, earning high marks and impressing his professors with his analytical abilities and creative problem-solving skills. During this time, his self-directed learning continued to play a crucial role in his development, as he spent countless hours poring over scientific journals, textbooks, and the works of renowned physicists and engineers.
One of the most significant books that influenced Tesla's thinking was Principles of Electrical Measurement by William Edward Ayrton, which ignited his passion for solving complex problems and pushed him to develop innovative solutions. Another important resource was the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose philosophical and scientific writings had a profound impact on Tesla's worldview, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all
