    About the Author

    Preface

Sometimes you learn things by accident. I was working as a software developer and slowly began to pick up the skills to manage a project by watching others do it. When you see something done well, it is wonderful. The first time I had to do it, let’s say it was not great at all. I saw firsthand how truly hard it was to do it right.

This book is meant for those of us who have never managed a project but have gotten that responsibility thrust upon them. A friend of mine worked for a startup once and he became the de facto project manager because no one else wanted to do it. As I wrote this, I thought about all the people who get voluntold to manage the project.

Or maybe you have managed a project or two, and things have not gone well. We have talked to a lot of people with project management experience, some with just a few years and others with multiple years of experience.

We will first start out with why we need project management, and then move on to some of the basics. This information will lay the groundwork for what happens. Just in case you get confused, we have an appendix with some common terms.

The next few chapters will take us through the normal project management process: starting, planning, building, and running a project. We will talk about some good skills to have as well as how to handle the inevitable change. Then we will wrap up with completing the project. This last step can sometimes be the most challenging.

This book is not exhaustive but more of a quick-start guide to project management, so read it quickly and get your basics under you. Then you can move forward into something more advanced. For a basic project,
