    1. The Creepy Basement

    Could you go to the basement under Building C? Mr. Vaslov asked me and Amy one Saturday morning. I need the white box from the shelves on the left.

    Sure! Amy said.

    Amy and I always like to help Mr. Vaslov. He takes care of Starwood Park Apartments, where we live. He’s also an inventor. Because of Mr. Vaslov, Amy and I wear superpowered purple sneakers. We can run ninety miles an hour.

    We arrived at Building C in less than half a blink. I stared at the steps going down to the basement.

    That’s when we heard Amy’s mother calling from outside 15C, their apartment.

    Come home! NOW!

    Sorry, Freddie, Amy said. I have to go.

    She was off in a cloud of Zapato Power smoke.

    Just my luck. The one time I really needed Amy, she had to go home.

    I took a deep breath. I wanted to get the box for Mr. Vaslov. He couldn’t walk very much because he was still taking it easy after an operation on his bad knees. Until he healed, he needed me to go up and down stairs for him.

    But I wondered why grown-ups store so much stuff in basements. Even with a light bulb in the ceiling, they are creepy. Full of shadows. No me gusta nada.

    Taking another deep breath, I made myself go down the steps. At the bottom, I opened the basement door. Then I lunged for the light switch on the wall.
