The Desendant - Kara Sherman
Chapter One
Amelia had always been curious about her family's history. At eighteen, she felt an inexplicable pull toward the ancient stone house her ancestors had built on the rugged coast of Scotland. This summer, she finally convinced her parents to let her spend a month there, hoping to uncover the secrets of her lineage.
The house stood on a cliff, overlooking the tempestuous North Sea. The locals whispered that it was haunted, but Amelia dismissed the tales as folklore. She arrived on a misty afternoon, the sound of waves crashing against the rocks below filling her ears. The house was cold and dark, but Amelia felt a strange sense of belonging as she crossed its threshold.
That night, as she lay in bed, she heard the soft sound of footsteps outside her door. Her heart pounded, but curiosity won over fear. She followed the sound down a narrow hallway and into a forgotten room at the back of the house. The air was thick with the scent of the sea, and the room glowed with an ethereal light.
There, standing by the window, was a translucent figure of a young woman. Her long, wet hair clung to her face, and her dress dripped with water. Amelia's breath caught in her throat.
Who are you?
she managed to whisper.
The ghost turned to her, eyes filled with sorrow. I am Elspeth, your ancestor. I drowned in the sea a thousand years ago.
Amelia's fear melted into compassion. Why are you here?
I am bound to this place,
Elspeth replied. I cannot rest until the truth of my death is known.
Amelia felt a shiver run down her spine. What happened to you?
Elspeth's gaze turned toward the crashing waves below. I was accused of witchcraft. The villagers threw me into the sea. They believed the ocean would judge me.
Tears welled in Amelia's eyes. That's horrible.
Elspeth nodded. I need your help, Amelia. You must find my journal. It holds the truth of my innocence. Only then can I be free.
Determined to help, Amelia spent the next days searching the house. She scoured the attic, rummaged through old trunks, and read every ancient book she could find. Finally, hidden beneath a loose floorboard, she discovered a leather-bound journal.
