Chair Yoga for Women Over 60 - Matilda Harris
Introduction
Aging is not ‘lost youth’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength.
— Betty Friedan.
Our bodies and lifestyles evolve as we age, bringing unique challenges and opportunities. Understanding and adapting to these changes is key to a vibrant and fulfilling life. In our later years, decades of work, stress, and labor can take their toll and lead us to believe that we cannot exert ourselves physically. While it’s true that we cannot pursue things with the same vigor as youth, it should not deter us from living healthily and happily. If not addressed, we lead ourselves into many health complications that can be easily avoided with certain techniques and routines. But what exactly are seniors at risk of?
Due to inactivity and improper nutrition, aging can bring about many natural changes that can lead to various health issues. One of the most significant changes is the loss of muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia. This natural process can be accelerated by inactivity, leading to increased weakness and reduced mobility. Such a loss in muscle strength makes daily tasks more challenging and contributes to a greater risk of falls and injuries.
Alongside muscle degeneration, our bones also tend to lose density over time, which can lead to osteoporosis and an increased likelihood of fractures. Joint health is another concern as we age. The cartilage in joints gradually wears down, often leading to conditions like arthritis, which can cause significant pain and restrict mobility. Another area that gets affected is our balance and coordination. Deterioration in these abilities increases the risk of falls, which can have severe consequences for seniors. Metabolic changes are also a part of the aging process, often leading to weight gain. This can be a gateway to various health issues, including diabetes and heart disease, if not managed through regular exercise and a balanced diet.
Lastly, cognitive decline is another critical concern. Without regular mental stimulation and physical activity, there's an increased risk of a faster decline in cognitive functions, potentially leading to conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, aging can decrease flexibility as tendons and ligaments become less elastic. This reduction in flexibility can increase the risk of injuries, making stretching and flexibility exercises, such as yoga, important for maintaining mobility.
In summary, aging brings about various challenges, but many of these can be mitigated through a lifestyle that includes regular exercise, proper nutrition, and mental wellness practices. By understanding these changes and addressing them proactively, seniors can maintain a higher quality of life and independence later.
We aim to provide you with a handbook that centers around one particular discipline that can help you overcome all these problems without the risk of overexertion or danger. Chair Yoga Basics
Before delving into actual exercises, you’d likely appreciate knowing what you’re getting yourself into. Yoga has been around for ages, originating in India centuries before many modern fitness methods began to take shape. It is an ancient practice with a rich history of over 5,000 years. Initially, yoga focused more on spiritual and mental well-being, involving meditation and rituals. Over centuries, yoga evolved into various forms and schools, each with its unique practices and philosophies.
As yoga spread beyond India, it continued to evolve. This is where yoga took a drastic progression for modern consumers like us. The 20th century saw a significant shift, with yoga becoming more focused on physical postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama), adapting to the needs and interests of a global audience. This physical aspect of yoga became particularly popular in the West. This evolution reflects yoga's adaptability and enduring relevance across different cultures and lifestyles.
