INTRODUCTION
The author is a passionate swimmer who has been swimming since she was six years old. She has swum over twenty-nine of the top thirty freestyles in history, making her career incredibly long. On average, she swims nine meets annually, which is 180 multi-day meets. The author's identity as a swimmer is built on her dedication to the sport and the unique excitement that comes with race day.
The author's story is unique in that she did not set out early on with the goal to become a professional athlete. She began swimming in races since she was six years old, but her initial ambition was simply to make it across the pool without stopping. She has been training for the Paris Olympics since the end of the pre-Olympic Year, which begins on September 1, and she is now escalating every aspect of her training to improve her performance.
The author recalls her first summer-league pool experience, which was a blast. She remembers playing sharks and minnows in the pool, and feeling more at home in the water than on land. She believes that human beings are not naturally born swimmers and must be taught to swim.
The author's journey to the Olympics began with her mother teaching her how to oat on her back and hold her breath. Despite her fear of the water, she never had that fear and has always enjoyed the thrill of swimming.
Swimming has been a lifelong passion for the author, who began swimming at age six. The sport provided resistance and allowed the author to feel weightless while pushing themselves to their limits. Swimming challenged the author's body and psyche, making it a unique and challenging experience.
The author's first race in 2003 was a success, as they swam in lane three and came in second in the eight-and-under 25-yard freestyle. Their dad watched the race on his camcorder, and the author's observations have become the template for their entire swimming journey.
Swimming is an unusual career that relies on the will of the swimmer, with the author being the only one present every stroke. They have been mentored by devoted coaches and family members who have kept them sane and grounded throughout their journey.
The author's goal was to better themselves through swimming, discovering who they were and what they were made of. The pool provided the ideal instrument for that journey, and the pursuit has shaped them into the best version of themselves.
The author believes that the past is prologue in swimming and that swimming has rendered them into someone they wouldn't be otherwise. They hope that their tenacity will outlast any blip of athletic fame, which would be the gift of a lifetime.
Becoming a successful athlete requires the help of many others, and this book aims to lay out all the ingredients of their swimming life. By reflecting on their childhood, teenage years, and early twenties, the author can understand how and why they developed into the person they are today.
PALISADES
Growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, the author's family was a close-knit community with a strong swimming background. They attended Little Flower School and were assigned buddies
at Little Flower School. The author's mother wanted them to join the Palisades swim team, which had an outdoor 25-meter pool surrounded by trees. The summer swim leagues had a dynamic dynamic, starting with a weekly swim meet for boys and girls, young and older kids, all the way through high school.
The author's swimming routine took over the family, with parents driving to practice and traveling with them to meets. This required sacrificing other activities, such as visiting their grandmother's farm in North Dakota, and having a pool nearby. The author joined Nation's Capital Swim Club, a year-round swim team, and participated in various swim meets every year.
Eventually, the author qualified for the Potomac Valley Swimming Zones team,
